Signs of Attraction by Laura Brown: Carli’s always been able to get along in classes despite signs-of-attraction-laura-brownher hearing loss, but in her new course she has no idea what her bearded and accented professor is saying. To the rescue comes Reed, deaf and the cutest boy she’s ever seen, and he helps her on a journey of self-acceptance over her deafness.

For two years, Reed has kept to himself and his small crew of friends after a very bad experience with another Hard of Hearing girl he fell for and helped along with the suicide of his father. But Carli has him waking up once more and reaching for desire.

But as their romance grows, Carli experiences a trauma that leads to a recurrence of all that Reed felt two years ago, and he isn’t so sure he can stay by and watch, no matter how he feels.

Reed: Man. Woman. Dinner.
A burst of laughter had me clamping a hand over my mouth.
Reed: Otherwise known as a date, by the noncaveman species, which I can’t guarantee I am not. You can practice the half-dozen signs you know.
Me: As long as you don’t toss me over your shoulder, I’m in.
Reed: As stated above, I make no guarantees.

Signs of Attraction is deep, heart-wrenching, and traumatic. I couldn’t put it down because I needed the happy ending and, even being a painful journey, I loved every second of it. Reed is honestly the ultimate sweetheart. He’s been through a lot the past few years, but he always maintains a strength I love to see.

Carli just about killed me. Her pain is in the present, and it forces her on a very difficult path. But, by the end, I admire her character and fight despite all that she faces ahead of her. Reed, though, his feelings for her and wonderful treatment of her just make me swoon.

Even loving the story and their romance, it was a bit unevenly set in the story. Beginning very soft and slow, there’s little tension. The story then ramps up a whole lot in the second half. I almost felt their romance turn a little too negative, but it always felt real and deep.

For those who want this deep, heart wrenching read that you won’t want to put down, I recommend Signs of Attraction. It was fantastic, and definitely stayed in my mind.

Do you know what hearing loss sounds like? I do.

All my life I’ve tried to be like you. I’ve failed.

So I keep it hidden.

But on the day my world crashed down around me, Reed was there.

He showed me just how loud and vibrant silence can be, even when I struggled to understand.

He’s unlike anyone I’ve ever known. His soulful eyes and strong hands pulled me in before I knew what was happening.

And as I saw those hands sign, felt them sparking on me, I knew: imperfect could be perfect.

Reed makes me feel things I’ve never felt. It’s exciting…and terrifying.

Because he sees me like no one else has, and I’m afraid of what he’ll find if he looks too closely.

The only thing that scares me more than being with him? Letting him go.
