In Something More Than This by Barbie Bohrman, Sports journalist Katy Lewis is hitting her stride at work with the upcoming football season on the horizon. With her best friend and roommate Mimi’s antics keeping her entertained and her other best friend, her boss, Dylan grilling her with sports trivia, Katy’s got it pretty well made. But when a voice message pops up from Conner, the guy who used to be her best friend before she opened her big old mouth and scared him off with her teenage declaration of love, she’s not sure if she can face him almost a decade later.
‘All this time he’s been right there, always supporting me, always caring about me…and vice versa. How do I know where the friendship ends and something else begins?’
Katy jumps at the chance to get reacquainted with her friend Conner, but it seems he may have more than friendship on his mind now. To cap it all off, she’s becoming more aware of Dylan, of how attentive he is with her and how much with him being a part of her daily life. Katy goes from having no romantic interests to now finding herself in the middle of a confusing tug-of-war over her heart. When did things become so complicated? And how will she determine what the right choice is?
“Do you want me to kiss you? Is that what you want?”
I nod again.
“Tell me. I need to hear you say it. I need to hear you ask me.” He licks his lips, then says, “I’m afraid I won’t be able to stop myself. I’ve wanted this…you. I’ve wanted you for so long.”
So much fun! Something More Than This was a totally entertaining contemporary romance that combined a few tropes into one storyline: Friends-to-More, Love Triangle, and Boss/Employee. With all of that going on, how could it not be good, right?
This quick romance really did have me laughing and cheering for my favorite of Katy’s two love interests. (I’m not tellin’ which one, though;).) The first word that comes to mind when I think of Katy’s personality is adorkable. I loved that she was a sports journalist, and obviously a huge sports nut, even though a lot of the coaches and players didn’t take her seriously where it’s still more of a ‘man’s world’. She was very strong in regard to her career, but I liked seeing her vulnerable side when it came to her love life. It felt real to me to see her struggle between Conner and Dylan.
There wasn’t an overabundance of waffling between the two heroes on Katy’s part, the story having just the right amount of angst to get the point across. But I really did like both Dylan and Conner. They both had their merits. And the flashback passages that were included were very well done. It helped fill in the blanks of Katy’s background with both men so the reader could get an accurate picture of how everything started and what their emotional level was together.
I do have to mention that every character more than held their own weight and were perfectly developed for their roles in the plot. I would love to see more of outrageous Mimi, and Katy’s brothers: overprotective Simon and compassionate Jonathon in the future. Maybe they can get their own chance at love…?
Super cute and pleasantly engaging, I didn’t want to put Something More Than This down. This may have been my first time reading anything by Barbie Bohrman, but I have a strong feeling it won’t be the last time I check out her work.

Katy Lewis has it all: a sports reporting job she loves, a great roommate, and two brothers who, while nosy, always have her back. But when Conner Roberts, Katy’s unrequited first crush, suddenly shows up—and shows interest—after nine years, she reverts to a sweaty, panicked sixteen-year-old once more.
And if trying to read Conner’s signals isn’t tough enough, Katy’s heart is sending some mixed messages of its own. When a beautiful blonde coworker starts pursuing Katy’s boss, Dylan Sterling—her longtime mentor and friend—she realizes she may have a problem with that. A reunion with Conner is what she’s dreamed of for so long…so why can’t she stop thinking about Dylan?
For the first time ever, Katy must fact-check her heart. Should she go after the guy she thought she always wanted or see if there’s something more with the one who’s been there all along?

LOL! Thanks, Sharlene. It was difficult to keep who she chooses under wraps as well as who I thought she should end up with. Lots of fun though!

Oh adorkable characters are so fun. Love those friends to lovers romances. Sounds like a good one 🙂

Aren’t they fun? LOL The mix of characters just hit me right in this one. Funny, modern…it was a bit like a soap opera with all the romance floating around. But not melodramatic.
