In Surprise Twins for the Surgeon by Sue Mackay, Alesha Milligan is all alone on a holiday she was supposed to be taking with her boyfriend until he broke things off. So, it’s just lucky that Kristof Montfort comes to her rescue on her first night in Dubrovnik. Determined to enjoy her vacation, she finds herself having a fling with the gorgeous Kristof. However, when she discovers she’s pregnant, she knows she has to tell the father. Yet, nothing is ever simple, especially when she knows that Kristof wants nothing to do with forever after. Will Alesha be able to convince Kristof that he shouldn’t allow the past to continue to keep him from everything he deserves such as love, family and happiness or will Kristof’s past demons keep him apart from the woman he’s falling in love with?
Finally Kristof turned and leaned back against the window sill. “I’m sorry. I know you’re not a conniving woman. I know you’ll only ever want the absolute best for your child.”
“Our child.”
He nodded. “Our child. I will want the same. Just give me time.” His chest rose as he breathed in. “I have been married. It was enough of a disaster that I never want to repeat the experience.”
The surprise pregnancy trope is a trope that I really enjoy reading and Ms. Mackay has delivered an absolutely engaging, fast-paced, wonderful read in this book where the introduction of the main characters to each other was cute because the heroine needs someone to come to her rescue; the dialogue was entertaining due to the main characters back stories, as both have been hurt by past relationships and don’t know whether they’ll ever be able to give another relationship a shot; and the obstacles these two face to be together had me reading quickly, determined to discover whether the hero and heroine would overcome the obstacles that keep them from their happy ever after.
With the main characters, I really enjoyed these two together, as it’s not easy for either to trust because of all they’ve been through in the past, but I liked that they gave each other a chance. Moreover, the heroine is strong and brave by going on the trip by herself. I also liked how kind and caring she is, which is proven by her determination to help a little girl see that there are good people in the world. Will she be able to get through to the young girl? While the hero, he’s been through a lot and I couldn’t help but sympathize with him when it comes to everything his ex put him through. How could he have been so wrong about her? I also liked the fact that he’s hard-working and does a lot to help his mother because he feels such guilt over how he treated her over the years and because the kids at her center need his skills as a doctor.
”Pull the other one, Kristof. You think all those weeks you’ve spent helping out at the Croatian children’s home wasn’t about showing how you felt for your mother?”
His smile, when it came, was the most relaxed and happy he’d ever given her. “Now I understand why I love you so much. There’s no hiding from you.”
Overall, Ms. Mackay has delivered a superb medical romance in this book about healing and family; and where the chemistry between this couple was strong from the moment they met and kept getting stronger the more time they spent together; the romance was delightful and had me loving these two together; and the ending had me loving the hero’s determination to show the heroine that he’s ready for a life with her and that he won’t let anything keep them apart, especially not his past. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up nicely because it shows how in love these two are. I would recommend Surprise Twins for the Surgeon by Sue Mackay, if you enjoy medical romances, the surprise pregnancy trope or books by authors Caroline Anderson, Dianne Drake, Marion Lennox and Charlotte Hawkes.
