Sweet Home Alaska by Jennifer Snow: While Skylar is unhappy to see Dex, he is thrilled to see her. He hadn’t wanted to give up on their mutual dream all those years ago, and he certainly never stopped loving her. He’s determined to break down the wall she put up and get her to let him into her life again. They face several obstacles though, one being the generations-long feud between the Beaumont and Wakefield families, and the biggest one being that Skylar has no plans to stay in Port Serenity, while Dex has no plans to ever leave.

I liked both Skylar and Dex. Both of them were heartbroken over their breakup, and it was clear that they never stopped loving one another, no matter how hard Skylar tries to hide it. When Dex finally reveals the real reason he couldn’t go to the Coast Guard Academy with her after graduation, I liked how Skylar handled the truth. I also liked how she tried to find alternative jobs that Dex would enjoy, although she does come across as a little pushy about it, which did leave me feeling a little frustrated with her.

Readers who read this author’s Wild River series, especially book six, Alaska Dreams, will notice a little cross-over with a couple of the characters. It was a nice surprise, and I was happy to see how things were working out for them.

Sweet Home Alaska is a small-town, second chance romance about healing, family, and love. It was a good beginning to this new series, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next in Port Serenity.

Skylar Beaumont never wanted to return to Alaska. Still, when duty calls, she can’t refuse. And, as a third-generation “Coastie” and the only female captain in the local coast guard, she has too much to prove. Being stationed in her hometown of Port Serenity isn’t ideal—but she’ll tough it out until her transfer goes through and she can move on to warmer waters. That’s the plan, at least, until she crashes into Dex Wakefield. Again.

Shocked to see his secret high school sweetheart after all this time, Dex can’t help but wonder if he should finally come clean. Skylar deserves to know the real reason why he abandoned the dream they’d shared—and broke her heart. But this small tourist town is home to one big grudge where their families are concerned… And leaving the past behind might be the only way Dex and Skylar will finally realize that their first love deserves a sweet second chance.
