Taking Fire by Cindy Gerard is a fast paced, action packed, nail biting romantic suspense that is easy to become immersed in. When Bobby met Talia in Kabul, he fell hard and fast… He went against his gut feeling, trusted Talia, only to narrowly miss being killed himself, then finding out Talia is not at all who she said she was…after she’d already disappeared.
Six years later they are suddenly faced with each other again in the most unexpected, heart wrenching circumstances. They must pull together, and work together on the most personal case ever…one Bobby never expected or saw coming. Talia has her secrets, but they are no longer just hers to keep because they have put her, Bobby, and someone else they both care about in imminent danger from people who have no morals. A need for revenge drives them…will Bobby and Talia find them in time?
Taking Fire has a strong sense of realism to it…because it could happen. This kept the plot very edgy! The danger felt real, and the fear was palpable. I liked the tenuous connection between Bobby and Talia, watching it grow, seeing them take a step back again, the uncertainty and fears they experienced made them feel like real people. I really liked how Cindy brings in the secondary characters, mainly Bobby’s team. This showed a great connection between a group of people who have all suffered at some point, but who have such loyalty and caring for each other. As the suspense amped up, so did the feelings and realizations for the characters. It was really neat to see. I liked how Bobby and Talia worked together despite their past, and I liked how family is woven into the plot in many different ways.
A strong blend of romance, second chances, and suspense, I’d recommend Taking Fire to any romantic suspense reader. Taking Fire can be read alone, but reading the previous books in this series will make you understand some of the secondary characters and how they all fit together.

Betrayal. Retribution. Redemption?
Six years ago, tough-as-nails military contractor Bobby Taggart met the woman of his dreams in war-torn Kabul—a sexy, whip-smart war correspondent who approached him at a local bar, took him to bed, made him fall in love…and then mysteriously disappeared. In her wake, the terrorist leader he’d been mining for valuable intel was assassinated—then Bobby discovered his phone had been bugged. And he’s pretty damn sure he’s been played for a fool…
