The Do-Over by Bethany Turner: When McKenna is summoned to the boardroom at Wallis, Monroe and Burkhead she pretty much expects to be named senior partner, however the very last thing that she could have expected was to be told that not only is she not going to be named the new senior partner but she is now under investigation for embezzlement! If this wasn’t a blow enough she will be put under unpaid leave until her name has been cleared! With this slap in the face McKenna decides sublet her West Side apartment and head home to Durham, North Carolina.

With her plan to save some money while this whole horrid situation blows over, all she needs to do now is figure out how to save face, well this is turning out to be the real challenge especially with Durham’s favourite son Henry having set his sights firmly on her! With the investigation almost wrapping up, a shocking family curse hanging over her head and a charming blast from the past McKenna finds herself questioning what is it that she really wants in life.

Firstly I just have to say that the cover of this book was just the cutest, I loved the whimsical, fantasy feel that it had. This in itself already had me pretty sold on The Do Over, and I could not help but love it even more as I began to read McKenna’s story. The Do Over was definitely not your typical romance, I will say that it leaned a bit more to the chick-lit genre with a few twists and turns. I loved that it was so easy to get immersed in this novel with all that family drama, cute teenage rivalry turned now lovers, mixed in with a good dose of self growth.

The only thing holding this booking from getting a full five star rating from me was our main character, I just found McKenna a bit stiff. Initially it was hard to fully get behind her, I mean she pretty much ignored her entire family just to pursue her work that is until everything comes crumbling down around her. I will say that I did warm up to her a bit the more I read and got to see her grow while in Durham. I liked getting to see her with Henry, though I do wish she hadn’t lied so much, this was just uanessacry drama.

Good gosh, Henry. I just loved that he was this silent hero and kind of just went with the flow. I loved that he had this huge glow up since McKenna last saw him and that he really is the man now. The thing I liked the most about Henry was that he had own achievements and was well and truly living his best life. I really enjoyed getting to see their dynamic grow and seeing them try to figure out where to go next.

As far as the romance goes it was a pretty light read, with more aspects of self growth and awareness for McKenna. None the less it was a really enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend reading The Do Over, this book was so easy to get absorbed into and overall such a feel good read!

When McKenna Keaton walks into the boardroom of Wallis, Monroe, and Burkhead, she expects to be named senior partner. Instead, she learns she’s being investigated for embezzlement. To wait out her unpaid leave, McKenna sublets her Upper West Side apartment and goes home to Durham, North Carolina, to save money. Saving face is going to be another thing entirely, but she assumes her problems will blow over soon.

While living in her childhood hometown, McKenna learns about a family curse that—if real rather than imagined—could suggest she has less than a year to live. This information is troubling (of course!), but it’s the reunion with former classmate Henry—Durham’s favorite son—that flips her world upside down. Henry is now a celebrated documentarian, back in town to premiere his latest masterpiece. Vulnerable to (and desperately needing) a distraction as her life falls apart, McKenna begins seeing the shy nerd from high school in a whole new light.

As she waits out the results of the investigation and wonders if her literal life is hanging in the balance, McKenna debates her future and questions her past. She might survive it all in one piece—but a new love and a newly-examined life might be the only things that can save her.
