In The Heartbreak Hotel by Ellen O’Clover, Louisa “Lou” Walsh thought her six-year relationship with her college sweetheart, now rock star, Nate was on a solid path to a long future together. Sure, their passion has cooled slightly over the years. But with a degree in counseling, she knows that tends to happen over time. So, when Nate breaks things off with Lou in the most humiliating of ways, you would think she’d be well-equipped to handle the grief and anger. Nope. Being a therapist doesn’t necessarily mean it makes dealing with your own personal issues easier. Then Lou figures out that without Nate to handle the rent on their gorgeous house in the mountains of Colorado–the only place she’s ever truly called home–she might have to relocate. And she knows she will do whatever it takes to keep the house.

“You stayed with someone for six years just to keep living in this house?”
“Maybe not all six,” I say. There was a time, once, when I loved Nate in every real way. “But definitely the last few.”
“Why?” Henry watches me like I’m a science experiment. “That’s a high price to pay.”
“I’d pay any price for this place.”

After brainstorming with her best friend Mei, Lou decides to plead with the landlord, veterinarian Henry Rhodes, to turn the house into a B&B–for heartbroken people. The punny name Comeback Inn will surely draw attention (and smiles). Even though Henry agrees to let Lou run the business for six months to see what success she finds, he isn’t super happy about the “heartbreak” part of the plan. She has to wonder if it’s because of the sorrow she can see in his beautiful eyes when he thinks no one is looking. Lou is right. And as Henry opens up a little bit at a time to her, she has no idea how traumatic of a past he’s had. And how his house ties into it all. But as they grow closer, finally giving in to the attraction that’s been simmering for months, Lou finds out information that changes the dynamics between her, Henry, and someone else close to them. It leaves her to wonder if she has the strength and wherewithal to work through it.

“Louisa,” Henry murmurs, and it sounds like a goodbye. I feel the house holding us close. “I’ve been inside out, with wanting you.”

A romantic debut by Ellen O’Clover, THE HEARTBREAK HOTEL was a novel with a heaping helping of heart, connections and friendships, self-discovery, and every emotion imaginable.

“Your openness is your superpower, Lou, not your weakness. Don’t let the world convince you otherwise.”

Ellen O’Clover created a wonderfully contemplative story that to me was equal parts romance and women’s fiction. THE HEARTBREAK HOTEL centered around the idea of our heroine Lou giving those who needed a soft place to land a beautiful house in the Colorado mountains where they could heal and even grow new friendships while overcoming some type of loss. So, there were certainly some moments where heavier subjects were discussed. But overall, there was a comforting sense of camaraderie and shared experiences that drew Lou and her guests together. But don’t worry, there were some laughs and shenanigans along the way as well.

The romance aspect was a slow burn that truly seemed inevitable. Veterinarian Henry–wow did I love him!–and Lou had so many tender scenes where they just *saw* each other. They saw the sadness and anguish, the longing to move on from their pasts, and had this innate bond that you could tell would make them a powerful, loving couple. O’Clover did a great job conveying their feelings in such a poignant way that I think readers will experience it along with the characters.

The Comeback Inn (the actual name of the B&B) had seen its share of heartbreak and heartache over the years but I loved that Lou–and Henry, Mei, Joss, and the guests–brought it back to life. They added laughter, joy, music and activity to it and made it into the home that it was meant to be. As a therapist, Lou’s thoughtful group sessions and nature excursions went a long way to help everyone process what they were going through. And it was so satisfying to see some of her guests (and loved ones) get some of their shine back, a little bit at a time.

A bed-and-breakfast for the brokenhearted might hold the key to another chance at love in this achingly hopeful debut romance.

Louisa Walsh emerged from a tumultuous childhood with a degree in counseling, a wealthy boyfriend, and her sunny outlook on life mostly intact. But that optimism is tested when she’s dumped and left unable to afford rent on their gorgeous house in the mountains of Colorado. Even with her life in disarray, Lou knows losing the one stable place she’s ever called home is not an option.

Her ask her reclusive landlord, Henry Rhodes, to let her stay for free in exchange for renting out the house’s many rooms as a bed-and-breakfast. She’s shocked when he agrees to her terms, and even more surprised to discover Henry is a handsome thirtysomething veterinarian with silver at his temples and sadness in his eyes. One who does not take it well when Lou starts marketing her B and B as a retreat for the recently heartbroken.

But as the Comeback Inn opens its doors to its weary, hopeful guests, Lou and Henry find themselves dancing around both their undeniable connection and the closely held secrets that threaten to topple this fragile new start. A chance at love, here, could be too close to home…or it could be exactly where their hearts finally heal.
