The Law of Attraction by Laura Carter: Hot shot Manhattan lawyer Drew Harrington is on the cusp of achieving all of his dreams, all he has to do now is prove to his firm that the is more to him than the cold cutthroat lawyer and well known ladies man. Should be a simple task for someone like Drew, the only problem being that Drew does not believe in long term romantic commitments, that is until Becky Fletcher tries to steal his morning bagel. There is just something about the sassy cute British pastry chef that has Drew wanting to do all those cute cheesy tourist things that he never liked all these years. Soon Drew finds himself wondering if just maybe he had it wrong all these years and that there is more to life than just work and meaningless flings, but what happens when some of the secrets from Becky’s past come back to her new perfect Manhattan life? Can these two find their storybook ending or is this only going to make Drew put up his walls again?
With a cover as cute and playful as this one, I had gone in expecting a easy cute romcom read, however I got a deeper more hard hitting read than that with Becky and Drew. I have to say that I really enjoyed that this was more than a cute and sweet romcom, instead we got a book that touches on some important life moments which are woven through a cute love story. I will say that I was expecting this to be a duel perspective read but quite liked that we got the majority of the book from Drews perspective.
I really liked both main characters, I will say that it did take me a moment to warm up to Drew but once we got to know our hero and got to see him redeeming himself it was hard not to like the guy. For the most part he comes across as this cocky, know it all guy that doesn’t care much about anyone else but this turns out to only be the façade that he puts up to shield the outside world from his much kinder and more sensitive side. I really enjoyed that the large majority of this story was told from his perspective, this way we get to his more sensitive side that he liked to hide and all the insecurities that he faces. I do have to say that I enjoyed getting to see him grow as a person as the book progressed, as for our sweet British pastry chef Becky, well she was Drew’s polar opposite. Where Drew was cocky and arrogant, Becky was sweet and kind. I really liked her character and all the sunshine and happiness that she brought where ever she went. In saying that Becky did have a slightly darker past that she was trying to run away from, which have left with fears, insecurities and scars of her own. For the most part I love her powerful and independent girl boss vibe that she exuded, though I do wish that we got to see things a bit more from her perspective.
Together Becky and Drew had some of the best chemistry, they didn’t have the best start but that quickly changed as their relationship grew and their bond strengthened. More than anything I loved that they had this sweet and cute insta- love kind of romance, this made for a cute buffer to the more serious topics faced in this novel. All in all this was a fast read with catchy dialogue, easy to relate to characters and a story that will pull you in. I really can not wait to see what Carter has in store for us in the next book in this series.
