In The Romance Revival by Christina Lauren, Dr. Emery Finch has been working in medical research for years. And finally, all of that time and frustration have paid off. She and her colleague, her best friend Annie, have created a compound that can change the world. Just as their findings are seeing the light of day, Emery has a personal tragedy that shatters her world. Her beloved husband Luca is killed in an accident. And even though it puts everything at risk, she uses her research and her lab to bring Luca back. She knows she’s not spent time with him in the past few years like she should have–her secret work took over her waking hours even before she met him and fell in love, to be honest. But Emery is willing to make any changes necessary to improve their relationship. To show Luca how much she adores him. Even if that means taking time away from her life’s work.

‘I was lucky to love him a first time; I’ll never take for granted this chance to love him again.’

Emery tries to help Luca navigate their new normal with varied success. With some help from Annie, and Luca’s best friend Crash, they work on his recovery as well as try to keep what happened quiet. Because as important as it is for Luca and Emery to reconnect as a couple and decide what they want going forward, there are a lot of powerful, important people who could make things difficult for Emery and Annie at work. Luca will admit he doesn’t fully remember their past–yet–but he knows he needs to protect his wife and her best friend. If that means putting himself in harm’s way, so be it. But in the meantime, he will do all in his power to figure out how they can create the life they so desperately want together now that they have another chance to get it right.

‘There’s a noticeable shift between us… An unspoken agreement that we’re together in this… It’s us against the world.’

Just when I thought Christina Lauren had already created the most unique storylines and offbeat cast of characters, they go and write THE ROMANCE REVIVAL. The premise is a doozy: medical resurrection of the heroine’s husband who dies in an accident on their anniversary. That’s a lot to take in. But in true CLo style, I still found this to be a character-driven romance that showed tremendous emotional growth of both the hero and heroine, some giggles, and even some suspense with a twist I didn’t see coming.

‘I might not remember our past, but I know we have a future.’

Told from Emery and Luca’s POVs (mainly Emery’s), I was honestly worried going into this story. It seemed pretty far-fetched. But I was thoroughly charmed by each person we met in Luca and Emery’s lives. Their relationship wasn’t perfect. Far from it actually. There was still so much love–and heat!–between them still, though, that it truly felt like a relationship worth curating and saving. And talk about the ultimate do-over. When Emery used her breakthrough at work to bring Luca back after he was killed, knowing what trouble that could spell for her, the company she worked for, and her colleague and best friend, Annie, that went a long way to Luca to prove how much Emery loved him. That part–their relationship–felt like a classic CLo pairing. And it was (for me) what really stood out and held my attention.

You just can’t go wrong with a CLo book. And while THE ROMANCE REVIVAL wasn’t their typical straight up rom-com, it proved that this author duo can change up the romance sub-genres and still make it a page-turner.

QOTD: Have you read anything by CLo yet? If so, do you have a favorite book, series, or couple?

The instant New York Times bestselling authors of The Paradise Problem and The Unhoneymooners return with an unforgettable novel in which one fateful accident erases a troubled marriage from memory—and love gets one extraordinary do-over.

Three years ago, Emery Finch did something completely out of character: She got married. To Luca—the impossibly charming landscaper she met on one blistering night in Vegas who made her laugh, made her dance, made her feel.

But now, Emery is consumed by her top-secret job, missing dinners, forgetting anniversaries, and promising herself Luca will understand once her cutting-edge research comes to light. Until the unthinkable happens: A tragic accident takes Luca from her.

Desperate not to lose him, Emery breaks every rule to bring him back. And Luca would probably thank her for it, if only he could remember her. Their first kiss, their Sunny Sundays at the beach, the life they built together…all of it is gone.

It may be a miracle of science, but for Emery it’s her one shot at a second chance. And this time, she won’t waste it—because true love is always worth reviving.
