In The Shy Nurse’s Rebel Doc (Bondi Bay Heroes #1) by Alison Roberts, ER nurse Samantha ‘Sam’ Braithwaite has always played it safe for the sake of her parents. However, she’s more determined than ever to go after what she wants including proving she has what it takes to be a part of a Specialist Disaster Response Team (SDR team) and then making the cut. Yet, convincing her boss Blake Cooper she should be a part of the team isn’t going to be easy. Will Sam be able to win Blake over or will she blow her chance of getting everything she wants including a shot at happy ever after with Blake?
“Oh, no…” Emily sighed. “Do I have to warn her of your reputation?”
Blake grinned at her. “Do I have a reputation?”
She laughed. “Go away. Do your work. What you do in your personal life is none of my business.” He pretended not to hear her final murmur as he headed for cubicle three. “And thank goodness for that…”
I always love reading stories set in my home country of Australia and absolutely loved this first story of the Bondi Bay Heroes series where books one and four are penned by the fabulous Ms. Roberts while books two and three are penned by two other authors. The way this story started was exciting but had me a little worried too due to the medical emergency Blake rushes to handle. However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine come face-to-face for the first time where things really got interesting, as the heroine doesn’t make the best first impression with the handsome doctor and wonders how she’s supposed to come back from the moment of embarrassment and be able to work with him when she has to. Will Blake see that there’s more to Sam than the shy and accident-prone woman he first meets?
With the dialogue, it was entertaining and intense due to the main characters back stories, especially that of the heroine, as she’s felt she’s been wrapped up in cotton wool for too long by her over-protective parents and she’s ready to start living for her. Will she be able to convince Blake that she deserves a shot at the Specialist Disaster Response Team? Will she be able to handle the pressure the team faces if put to the test? Moreover, the heroine is strong, brave, hard-working, intelligent and I liked how determined she is to prove to the hero that she wants a shot at the SDR team, which is proven by how far she’s willing to go to show him she’s serious. Will she be able to face her fears, especially the one that forces her to remember her past and what happened to someone she loves?
While the hero, he’s confident, seems a bit of an adrenaline junkie when it comes to his work with the SDR team, hard-working and I liked that he gave Sam a chance, even though he’s determined to push her to the limits when it comes to what he expects of her in order for her to get a shot at the SDR team. I also liked the sacrifices the hero has made, which proves he’ll do anything for family, despite that his altruism hindered his shot at a dream job.
”I’ll bet she didn’t see it as a sacrifice. She loves you.”
Blake nodded slowly. “I know. And now I’m beginning to understand how you could choose to have a bond like that. How it can make even the things that seemed more important than anything else kind of…well, almost irrelevant.”
Overall, Ms. Roberts has delivered a really good read to open this series where the chemistry between this couple was intense; the romance was special, as these two aren’t interested in forever after, but find it growing harder and harder to resist; and the ending had me worried for Sam because of what happens and how it’s a painful reminder of the past, but had me liking the decision the hero made when it came to the heroine and needing someone by his side both personally and professionally. I also liked how things worked out for the best for this pair and the words the hero says to the heroine that shows how in love he is with her. I would recommend The Shy Nurse’s Rebel Doc by Alison Roberts, if you enjoy medical romances, workplace romances or books by authors Marion Lennox, Meredith Webber, Amy Ruttan and Janice Lynn.
