The Spaniard’s Pleasurable Vengeance by Lucy Monroe is a revenge romance, with a hero finding himself second guessing his plans when the heroine turns out to be not what he expected.
As a teenager, Miranda Smith was involved in a car accident with a young boy when he darted out into traffic and she was unable to stop in time. The boy ended up in a coma for a while but recovered. The parents of the boy wreaked havoc on Miranda’s life, forcing her to move and change her name. Years later, Miranda has the opportunity to tell her side of the story and she plans to go ahead and do it.
Basilio Perez is determined to keep Miranda from talking about the accident, fearing that it will do more harm than good for his nephew who is now living a normal, healthy life. Of course he believes his brother and sister-in-law’s side of the story, not Miranda’s. Seduction has always worked for him in the past, and he contrives to meet Miranda and gain her confidence so he can persuade her to stay silent. His plans backfire when he discovers Miranda really is a sweet, genuine woman and that there are details of the accident that have been kept hidden. What started out as revenge turns into a complicated affair as the two connect. Can there be a happy ending for this couple once all the secrets are laid bare?
Poor Miranda! It’s not enough to have the trauma of the accident; she also had to deal with the unfair fallout from the boy’s family that made her change her entire life. Despite the hardship she’s endured, she comes across as a genuinely likable and friendly character. Bas is a typical arrogant hero, one who believes he knows best and who will stop at nothing to protect his family. Once he realizes that Miranda is not the woman portrayed by his brother, and discovers some of the things his family has tried to do to harm her, he quickly changes his tune. The attraction between them is genuine even if it starts under false circumstances, and when Miranda finds out who Bas really is, he must redeem himself to have a chance of a life with her.
The love scenes are sensual and emotional and the couple gets their happy ending once things are sorted out. I loved the linked book Kostas’s Convenient Bride, and the couple from that story also make an appearance here (the heroines are sisters). For me, this one didn’t have the same compelling romance but is an okay read and I’ll be looking to see what Ms. Monroe has in store next.
