The Summer of Broken Rules by K.L. Walther: Summers at Martha’s Vineyard have always been tradition for the Fox family but this year is going to be a bit different, as this will be their first year without Claire. If seeing their entire family and being in Claire’s favorite place wasn’t hard enough Meredith has to also attend her cousins wedding minus her date. Full set on swearing of relationships after her long time boyfriend breaks up with her just before the trip, Meredith intends to use the summer to reconnect with her friends and family, however Mer did not expect to form such a fast bond with the grooms brother Wit.
Stephen Witry has been wanting more, craving an adventure he just didn’t think that it would come in the form of the pretty blonde who gave him a blue eye at his brother’s week long wedding celebration. Being a groomsmen at his brother event packed wedding is definitely not Wits idea of fun but when the host inform a the guest that the week will also be the backdrop of a family favorite game of Assassins Wit thinks fast and decides to team up with Meredith to outsmart the rest of the competition. Soon the two find themselves sharing more than just covert intell on who their next targets are but with the week fast coming to an end will Wit be able to make this thing with Meredith work long term especially when she learns what he has been hiding from her?
This book took me on an emotional journey, this was definitely not your run of the mill romance novel. This was a multi-layered journey to finding happiness again after losing someone important. It was nice to see the way Walther worked in Claire’s character even after her death, I loved that in a way she was still looking out for Meredith, almost even giving her a push towards happiness.
This was the type book that should definitely be turned into a movie, the entire description of The Farm and all the cabins was pure perfection. But it was the entire Assassins game that stole the show for me, I loved the way everyone got so invested in this game. All the mini alliances that were formed and all the secrecy and plotting was just brilliant! This was such a unique addition to the story that truly made this a memorable read. It also acted as the agent that brought Meredith and Wit together, I loved watching them start as co-conspirator and transition into more. In terms of romance this was a pretty slow burn but really cute at the end.
The Summer Of Broken Rules is an easy and entertaining read of two people trying to find their happily ever after with a little help from fate and a loving big sister. This slow burn romance will have you shedding a tear or two only to have you laughing the next moment at the silly game antics, this is a definite must read!
QOTD: Do you believe in fate and that we are each meant to be at a place at a certain time?
