In Their Double Baby Gift by Louisa Heaton , Matt Galloway never would have imagined that the last time he was on leave from the army would be the final time he would see or hold his wife Jen. They were looking forward to the birth of their first child, not knowing Matt would be left as a single dad to newborn Lily. His little girl is the only thing that keeps him going some days, knowing he has to be strong for her and in his new job at London Grace. Then Matt meets Jen’s best friend and fellow doctor Brooke Bailey. He’s startled by the rush of affection he feels for her, brushing it off as their common loss of Jen and their commiseration over being single parents. But he soon realizes his feelings are much more serious. And he’s not sure if he’s okay with that.

‘But it was scary how she made him question himself. His principles. His moral duty to uphold the memory of his wife and be respectful of how recently he’d lost her.’

Brooke had psyched herself up to be the best single mum ever, with a bit of support from her best friend Jen. But after Jen’s death, she felt lost and like she was just barely keeping up with taking care of little Morgan day to day, let alone going back to work at the hospital. Brooke is dealt another shock when she realizes Jen’s husband Matt is her new boss. Glad to finally meet the Major and see his lovely daughter Lily, she ignores the zaps of attraction between them. Brooke has a terrible track record with men and doesn’t want to hurt the camaraderie she’s building with Matt. When their feelings can no longer be ignored, though, she’ll have to decide if it’s worth it to risk her heart one last time.

‘They shared the same wound. They were two halves of the same scar. Perhaps that was why it felt so right to be in his arms. Because only together could they heal.’

A tough situation filled with complicated emotions, Their Double Baby Gift was a touching romance set in a London hospital with two doctors grieving over the loss of the same person.

To start off, I should warn readers that this book does deal with grief and death, specifically of a spouse and a best friend. So there were a few darker moments to get through. But overall I thought Louisa Heaton created a tender story with a slow burn romance that incorporated realistic feelings. It seemed right somehow that Matt and Brooke were torn when they realized they were attracted to each other, considering it had been only five or six months since his wife–and Brooke’s best friend–Jen had passed away. I could understand their confusion over wondering if their feelings were true or if they were just connecting emotionally because of the shared loss of Jen.

I’ll admit I had mixed feelings about Brooke and Matt getting together. Although I did think their personalities matched well, they were both highly skilled doctors, and I loved that they were such devoted single parents to each of their little girls. The scenes where we got to see Brooke and Matt interacting with their child and saw how much joy it brought to their lives was so heartwarming. But in some ways it did seem kind of quick for Matt to move forward after losing Jen. Add in the lack of communication between him and Brooke toward the last half of the book and it was a bit of a source of frustration. But the super romantic ending won me over and had me sighing happily so all was forgiven to Matt and Brooke over their stubbornness.

Their Double Baby Gift was a pretty solid story that started off with a touch of melancholy but quickly turned hopeful, ending with an abundance of joy over new beginnings.

Thanks, Kathleen. It’s been a while for me as well until the past month or so. This was a pretty nice reintroduction into the genre and was fairly complex emotionally as you could expect.

Yeah, it was a tough situation, that’s for sure. It was quick for them to fall for each other and kind of a quick book overall but not too shabby. LOL 🙂
