Veterinarian Dr. Veronica Torres is back in Midnight Pass, Texas. When she and Ace Reynolds ended their relationship Veronica moved to Houston, met and married Mark, an accountant and opened a veterinarian practice. When Veronica divorced Mark she moved back home to take over the practice of her retiring mentor Dr. Talente. Veronica is known as the best large animal vet in the surrounding area. She treated animals at Reynolds Station over the two years she’d been back but didn’t see much of Ace. A sick calf brought them back together. Too bad they argued and fought now just as much as they did in the past. Veronica still loves him though. Ace is who she turned to when danger threatened.
Ace Reynolds is the oldest of the Reynolds siblings. From a young age he felt the need to protect and take care of his two brothers and sister, especially after their father almost lost everything by his illegal rendering practices. (Rendering is feeding stock the by-products of other animals. This increases the risk of Mad Cow Disease.) The authorities caught his father but before facing justice he died of a heart attack. Ace felt the pressure to save Reynolds Station’s cattle business and with the help of his siblings brought Reynolds Station back. Ace was devastated when Veronica left, especially when he heard she got married. He tried to apologize to Veronica when she moved back but that didn’t seem to make a difference. Now that she’s back in his life Ace wants to keep her happy and safe. It’s not going to be easy since trouble has followed her from Houston.
Under the Rancher’s Protection by Addison Fox is the third book in her Midnight Pass, Texas series. This is a second chance romance. It is well-written and has well-developed characters. Veronica and Ace have a lot to work through and the danger Veronica faces throws them together enough to settle some past differences. I didn’t feel the suspense in this story until closer to the end. I liked the ending but some of the book before that was a little slow.
