In What a Woman Gets (Manley Maids #3) by Judi Fennell, when Liam loses a bet to his sister Mac, he has to work for her house cleaning company as a maid for a month. Rich girl Cassidy is just the kind of woman Liam has no desire to spend time with, let alone clean her home. She reminds him too much of his past.
Dependent on her father, the job she has with his company and his money, Cassidy has bigger dreams than many people know. She does not want what or who her father wants for her. When Cassidy has finally had enough and decides it’s time to follow her own dreams, her father cuts her off. With no place to go and no money, Cassidy is undeterred.
Liam is very conflicted. He is attracted to Cassidy but does not want to be, and he is an innately good person who offers her a temporary solution. Suddenly Liam finds himself with a room mate, and Cassidy finds herself cleaning his home. As the relationship between them slowly builds and they get to know each other under the surface, Liam realizes appearances can be deceiving and assumptions are usually only that. Cassidy feels more free than she ever has, and soon her and Liam realize they have more in common than they thought despite very different backgrounds. The chemistry between them goes from simmering to sizzling as their relationship develops. Have Liam and Cassidy found just what they need with each other?
Liam and Cassidy are two main characters who grow so much in the pages of What a Woman Gets. I liked how Cassidy finally decided to do what made her happy, no matter what the cost. It’s a lot of work, but she perseveres and doesn’t care what anyone thinks. She is much more strong willed than she first appeared, determined to be independent. And no matter how Liam treated her at first, she was a very classy lady through and through. Liam had a previous relationship that ended poorly, and he’s painting Cassidy with the same brush. I saw a lot of growth in him, he was aware of Cassidy and what she was doing, and admired her despite himself. The growth of their relationship was slow and steady and this worked well with the plot.
There are a lot of emotions in What a Woman Gets. Although the initial concept of the plot is not really believable, it moves on quickly and what the characters are going through is very believable. They have the same hopes and dreams as many people, and are working hard to achieve them. What starts off with a fairy tale like feeling quickly becomes more serious.
There are a lot of secondary characters in What a Woman Gets, but most of them are on the periphery, blend well and do not interfere with the main plot. I really love Liam’s grandmother and can’t wait to see what she gets up to next!
What a Woman Gets is the third book in Judi Fennell’s Manley Maids series. It can be read as a stand alone, but it’s even funner if you’ve read the other books too. I like that the books are all happening simultaneously. There is some overlap in the plot, but not enough to confuse if this is the first book you read in the series.
With humor and a well paced, smoothly written plot, I’d recommend What a Woman Gets to contemporary romance readers looking for a fun story line with characters who will really grow on you!
