In What the Fang by Stacey Kennedy, Willa Farrington is a witch with no magic. Tossed out of her coven, she finds herself in Charleston, a city run by vampires, where she runs a bookstore and has two vampires as best friends. One night she’s attacked by a vampire and saved by Killian Constantine, the Warden/ruler of the Charleston vampires. Somehow she called to him telepathically, so he doesn’t believe her story that she has no powers.

Willa and Killian soon discover who her father really is and learns that she is more than what she thought she was. As Willa, Killian, and her father, Ari, try to find answers and figure out who is behind the attacks, Willa is faced with not only coming to terms with who she is, but with the fact that the witch is falling in love with the vampire, which is forbidden by witches.

It felt like a lot was thrown at Willa in a short amount of time, and she just accepts it. Her first meeting with her father felt downplayed. Her meeting with the witches was brief, and I had been expecting more tension since they had kicked her out. Willa’s father senses there’s something between Willa and Killian, yet he never questions it. While it’s not a big thing, I thought it was strange that, with the connection between Killian and Ari, that the pair never discussed what was going on with the couple. Overall, it felt like these things were rushed or glossed over, when they could have used some expanding. As a result, it made the book feel rushed.

Despite the rushed feeling of the book, I did enjoy it. Humor is laced throughout the book, which made it entertaining. The world-building was good, and readers will leave with an understanding of the history between the witches and vampires. I really liked Ambrose, Willa’s pet dragon that acted like a dog, and I enjoyed most of the characters. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next, especially since Willa’s uncle, who is on a quest to become the most powerful vampire, is on the loose and Willa wants to stop him.

What the Fang is a paranormal story that has a little bit of everything: humor, suspense, mystery, friendship, and romance. If you’re looking for a quick read and enjoy stories about vampires and witches, I recommend giving this one a read.
