Today it is my pleasure to host contemporary romance author Melinda Dozier at HJ!
Top Three Favorite Scenes
Choosing a favorite scene is very hard task for an author who loves their book. I mean, I’m proud of Breaking the Rules and how every part built upon the other. So, I’ve chosen to share three scenes with completely different tones. I hope you enjoy them enough to want to read more about Hope and Colin.
Scene 1: Getting to Know Each Other
Early in the novel, Colin and Hope get to know each other in unconventional ways. In this scene, they become acquainted through a teenage-style relay race at Harbor Bay Prep – showing their flirtations and love for opposite baseball teams.
Using a megaphone, Dave bellowed out, “The first game will be the three-legged race. My assistants will give you a rope to tie your ankles together. The goal is to run to the finish line on the other end of the field.”
Hope took the rope another teacher handed her and gave it to Colin. “Have you done
this before?”
“Maybe as a Boy Scout.” He crouched down to tie the rope just as Hope did the same,
and they bumped heads.
“Ow.” She jerked up. “Sorry.”
He laughed and rubbed his forehead. “Great, I got stuck with Ms. Frequent Flyer for
my partner.”
“Hey, I’m not that bad.” She rubbed her head and then smiled. “Besides, I know a
doctor if something happens.”
He laughed, grabbing the edge of his hat. “I aim to please.” He held up his hand to signal stop and stooped lower to tie their ankles.
When he popped up, she asked, “Do you always wear that hat, Yank?”
He reached up and touched it. “It’s my lucky charm. How about you? Don’t you have a school cap to wear instead?”
“Actually we don’t. I should look into that.”
“Better than that crap.” He winked. Maybe having Hope as his partner wasn’t such a bad idea. For some reason, he always had fun around her. He felt different … lighter than he had in a long time. And he loved to hear her laugh, especially knowing he was the source of it.
Scene 2: Attraction is Growing
In this scene, Colin tries to open Hope’s eyes to the attraction that builds between them. Even if she doesn’t want to ‘break the rules,’ they have a connection they can’t ignore.
He shook his head. “I can’t believe we’re doing this.”
“Doing what?” She looked around, confusion in her eyes.
“Talking about the weather.” He scooted closer to her, making her back up toward the railing.
“Colin—” A warning came from her mouth.
He scooted her all the way back. “You can’t go around saying stuff like you did back there and just pretend nothing’s happening.”
“I’m sorry, Colin. I didn’t think before I spoke.”
He put his arms around her, holding onto the rail. “Sometimes it’s better to just speak what’s on your mind.” He lifted one hand and caressed her cheek. “Damn it, Hope. Life is too short to ignore the truth and the truth is that we are extremely attracted to each other.”
Scene 3: Pre-Lovemaking
And of course, the direction of Colin and Hope’s heated romance is important to see. Here’s a little, tiny sneak peak of the beginning of a spicy scene.
They curled up together on the big, fluffy outdoor pillows and looked up into the
night. Her body pressed against his with her hand across his chest, her head in the crook of his neck. “What was the emergency?” she asked.
“Can you believe my patient decided to take his own cast off and then hurt his leg
again? I had to re-reset his bone, recast him and then lay into him that he cannot remove the cast.” He closed his eyes. “Let’s not talk about it.” He pulled her closer and ran his hand down her arm. “I bet you didn’t know how often I have to run out at night.”
“I know you’re a doctor and that sometimes you’re on call.” She shrugged. “No
biggie.”
He brought her chin up and forced her to look at him. “Seriously? You’re not mad?”
“I’m not mad, only disappointed that we couldn’t spend more time together.”
“You’re amazing, you know that?” He leaned down and kissed her. When his tongue searched hers, she opened her mouth, letting her own explore his. He pulled her body on top of his and she squealed and laughed at the same time. Then his hands roamed her butt, like she’d wanted him to do all night. Only this time his hands brought the entire skirt up to show her matching pink thong. “Holy shit. You’re driving me crazy.”
“Do you think he’s asleep?” She bit her lip.
“He’s usually a deep sleeper.”
She rose and stood in front of the chair, reaching under her shirt and taking off her bra underneath her shirt. She threw it at him, which made him groan and try to stand.
“Nuh uh uh. No getting up yet.” She reached down and slid her bright pink underwear down her legs and circled them on a finger.
“How can I just sit here and watch this?” He reached out and she swatted at his hands. “This is complete torture.”
“Don’t you like watching?” She strutted a few steps toward the pool.
