Today it is my pleasure to Welcome author Kait Ballenger to HJ!
Hi Kait and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, Cowboy in Wolf’s Clothing!
Please summarize the book for the readers here:
Cowboy in Wolf’s Clothing is the second installment in my sexy paranormal romance series, the Seven Range Shifters, in which the heroes are cowboys by day, wolf shifters by night. In Cowboy in Wolf’s Clothing Grey Wolf High Commander and cowboy, Colt Cavanaugh, is known for his accomplishments on the battlefield…and his exploits in the bedroom. But Colt has a dark secret he’d do anything to protect. When a battle with the Grey Wolves’ bloodsucking enemies leads Colt to meet Belle Beaumont, a woman whose past threaten to expose Colt’s own dark secrets, the tension is high, the banter is quick, and the heat between these enemies to lovers is fire. For all intents and purposes, Colt and Belle should be mortal enemies. But after a mix of fate, circumstance, and raw attraction force them to spend a single night together, both their worlds are turned upside down and suddenly the one-woman Colt wants is the one woman his past dictates he can’t have.
Please share the opening lines of this book:
“Colt Cavanaugh strode across the pasture, holding the rim of his Stetson against the wind. The heels of his brown leather cowboy boots dug into the frozen ground, each step punctuated with murderous intent. He’d read the note scrawled in his packmaster’s hand an hour ago, yet he still seethed with anger. He’d never contemplated disobeying a direct order before, but there was a first time for everything.”
Please share a few Fun facts about this book…
- This book was a labor of love—literally! Not only did I find out I was pregnant with my second son while I was writing it, but many months later I finished the copyedits while I was in labor with him (unintentionally lol). At the time, I thought I was having false contractions, but he was born happy and healthy less than 24 hours later. The cover for the book was also revealed the same day he was born, so this book’s production has a lot of special memories for me.
- Colt’s horse is named Silver like from The Lone Ranger.
- Readers who enjoyed Wes and Naomi, the couple in Book 1, Cowboy Wolf Trouble, will love that they get an extra glimpse of them in this book while following Colt and Belle’s antics. I won’t totally spoil what happens with Wes and Naomi, but let’s just say there are bells ringing on the ranch and they’re not cow bells lol. But new readers need not worry if they haven’t read book 1. Each book stands alone, even though some of the characters reappear.
If your book was optioned for a movie, what scene would you use for the audition of the main characters and why?
There’s a scene toward the end of the book, where all the heat and tension between Colt and Belle finally comes to an apex. They’re alone on the porch of one of the ranch houses on the Grey Wolf’s Missoula ranch and they just can’t put off their true feelings any longer. It’s a heavy emotional scene and also super sexy, so if I were auditioning actors for Cowboy in Wolf’s Clothing the movie, I would want them to be able to convey both the tender heartfelt emotion and the high heat between these two characters in that moment. It’s one of my favorite scenes in the book.
“Hell, how do I say this?” He swore under his breath before he finally looked at her. “Belle, I’ve already forgiven you for any wrong you’ll ever do me a thousand times over. How could I not?” There was a deep sadness in his eyes that made her breath catch. It was everything she’d hoped to hear in one single look.
I want you. I care about you, and nothing’s going to change that.
He didn’t need to say it aloud.
“You saved me,” he said.
She forced a laugh. “Colt, you’ve saved my life more times than I can count. You don’t still think you owe me for when I patched you up after that vampire—”
“No.” He cut her off with the shake of his head. “That’s not what I mean.” He worried the brim of his Stetson in his hands, struggling to find the words. “When the vampires held me captive, it was the thought of the night we spent together that kept me going. And I…I can’t begin to tell you how much I’m grateful for that.”
It was the most romantic thing she’d ever heard, so full of emotion it made her heart ache. And she’d never been more relieved. Tears poured down her cheeks. She couldn’t stop them now.
He placed his Stetson back on his head. “Sweetheart, don’t cry.” He stepped toward her, and that was all the invite she needed.

What do you want people to take away from reading this book?
Hmmmm. That’s a hard question. When I write I don’t set out for the book to have an overall meaning or message, though they inevitably do. My hope when I’m writing is usually that my books are captivating, emotional, sexy reads that allow readers to escape for a while and leave them happy-sighing during the hero and heroine’s HEA. But if I had to pinpoint the “message” of Cowboy in Wolf’s Clothing, I guess it would be that no matter where you come from or how dark your past, you can find love and it can make you whole again.
What are you currently working on? What other releases do you have planned?
I am currently writing Book 4 in the Seven Range Shifter series, which is Maverick, the Grey Wolf packmaster’s book. The tentative title is Renegade Cowboy Wolf, but that may be subject to change.
I also just turned in final edits for Book 3 in the series, Wicked Cowboy Wolf, which releases January 28th, 2020! Wait til to you check out the cover of that one! The hero makes his dark debut in Cowboy in Wolf’s Clothing.

Like you, I love a book where enemies become lovers. Overcoming that initial hatefulness is a great read. But I also enjoy a good book where an emotionally scarred hero finds a way to heal his wounds with the help of true love.
kaitballenger
Same! I think the emotionally scarred hero healing wounds shows up in probably every book I write lol. Just different variations 😉
