Spotlight&Giveaway

Hi Sharon and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, In Search of Truth!

Thank you all so much for having me on your site today. I’m excited to be here to talk about the third book in my Deadly Force series In Search of Truth.

Please summarize the book for the readers here:

In Search of Truth is about a widowed anthropologist named Allison Pinckney who inherits a key to a seventeenth-century pirate cipher that makes her the target of two brutal arms dealers. Now, to save those she loves and discover who murdered her husband, she must solve the cipher. But as this mission becomes more and more dangerous, she reluctantly seeks help from a handsome man from her past. A man who’d once been her best friend, ex-Green Beret Zack Tremaine. The problem is that if she admits the secret life she’s been living, and gives into her long-buried feelings for Zack, it could cost them their lives.
Years ago Zack Tremaine betrayed his men and lost Allison, the only woman he ever loved. Today, those regrets are destroying him. And now that his men are caught in a fierce rivalry between two deadly enemies, his only hope to fix what he did wrong is to help Allison find her husband’s murderer. When he discovers Allison holds the secret to a pirate treasure, a treasure that may help him save his men, he ignores orders and gives up everything to help her search for an infamous pirate who died three hundred years ago. Despite the deadly risks, Zack has one last chance to save his men and redeem his honor. Even if the woman he loves breaks his heart…again.

Please share a few Fun facts about this book…

  • In the book, Allison is related to a woman names Mercy Chastain who, in 1704, was accused of witchcraft in Charleston, S.C. Mercy Chastain is based on a real-life woman who was accused of witchcraft in Charleston in 1704—but there’s a twist to her story. In real life, this woman was never named and she was acquitted unexpectedly. She is the only person in U.S history to be accused of witchcraft, never named, and mysteriously acquitted. In fact, there’s hardly any information on her at all. After her acquittal, she disappeared. She was also the last person ever formally accused of witchcraft in the U.S. There were other accusations later on, but they were all dismissed as malicious or hearsay. And this poor woman’s trial and acquittal was so important that the reasons for her acquittal were codified decades later by the Supreme Court as reasons why witchcraft was not a valid crime in the U.S.
  • Allison and Zack are looking for the lost treasure of the dread pirate Henry Avery. Henry Avery took the largest treasure horde in the history of piracy and then disappeared. He’s one of the very few pirates from the Golden Age of Piracy (1650-1720) not to face any kind of justice. Henry disappeared, taking his treasure with him. And no one has any idea what happened to him. Although there’s been lots of speculation about what may have happened to him. Robert Louis Stevenson and Daniel Defoe wrote about Henry Avery indirectly in their stories about pirates and lost seamen. In current time, Henry Avery’s mystery has shown up in Dr. Who and Twilight Zone episodes. What happened to Henry Avery and his treasure is one of the great unsolved mysteries of the late 17th century.
  • After being banned for 95 years (1912-2007), the distillation and selling of absinthe is now legal in the U.S. Not every state allows absinthe to be distilled, but South Carolina now has a number of well-known absinthe distilleries. Because of the quality of wormwood plants in the southern U.S. and the distilling techniques that date back to the 19th century, American absinthe is now considered some of the best in the world. In the book, Allison’s mother owns a distillery where she uses herbs and plants from her garden to make the infamous green-colored liquor.

If I could give Zack and Allison any advice before they started the book it would be this:

Don’t make any major life choices based on fear. Be Brave. Be Strong. Be Dauntless. If they’d listened to me before I wrote this book, none of the trials they had to undergo would be necessary. Unfortunately, Allison and Zack had to learn this lesson—that decisions based on fear cause more problems than they solve—the hard way. They had to learn these lessons on their own.

Intriguing. The first book in the series was intense and built a dark world. I had not realized a second book had come out. This third book sinks deeper into the world of danger, intrigue, hidden and evil. I know it will be good.
