Spotlight&Giveaway

Hi Jill and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, Maybe This Time!

Please summarize the book for the readers here:

Hello! My new book, Maybe This Time, is feel-good fiction mainly based in the beautiful English countryside, with two people meeting, hitting it off from the word go and discovering as the years go by that the timing is never right for them to be together. There’s romance, there’s comedy and there’s tragedy too…but will it ever be the right time for Mimi and Cal?

Please share the opening lines of this book:

It begins with city girl Mimi arriving in the gorgeous little village of Goosebrook for the first time:

So this was it then, the countryside. Well, there had been a few previous rural encounters over the years, but to a lesser degree. Whereas this definitely ranked as up close and personal.
Feeling intrepid, Mimi stepped down from the train and breathed in the mingled green scents of spring grass, new leaves, damp earth and the smallest hint of cow poo, presumably drifting across from the field visible through the lattice of trees on the other side of the track.

Please share a few Fun facts about this book…

  • OK, the idea for the whole book was inspired by a photo posted on Twitter of an upturned pregnant sheep in a field. Did you know that they can quickly die if they land like this and can’t get up again? Well you do now! Their fleeces can become sodden with rain and they need to be hefted back onto their feet if this happens, but a city girl might not be aware of this. And it formed the basis of the opening chapter when Mimi and Cal meet for the first time.
  • In another part of the book, Mimi travels to Puerto Pollensa on the Spanish island of Majorca to work for an absolute nightmare of a bestselling thriller writer called CJ, who was a joy to write. He’s definitely not based on any one real life author, but various aspects of his dreadful character may have been borrowed from a few different writers I may or may not have encountered or heard about over the years. He’s stroppy, short tempered, boastful, absolutely hates writing and needs to be bribed or bullied into doing it, and treats his assistants like slaves. Having said that, everyone who has read the book can’t wait to tell me how much they love CJ – he’s in danger of turning into one of my most popular characters ever. (Don’t tell him, though – he’ll just be even more insufferable!)
  • Okay, my third fun fact isn’t fun but will hopefully be educational. In the book, a cat becomes very ill after ingesting lily pollen. My literary agent sadly lost her beloved cat a couple of years ago because she wasn’t aware that lily pollen could be fatal, so I decided to include that as a storyline in the book in order to help spread awareness. Already several people have told me that they hadn’t known about this before, so hopefully it might prevent further sadness to cat owners in the future.

What do you want people to take away from reading this book?

If people read Maybe This Time, I hope it will whisk them away into a lovely world, cheer them up and make them see how individuals and communities can come together and recover from tragedy. It’s about friendship and caring, and loyalty and love. And it’s had the best reviews I’ve ever had, which has made me very happy indeed!

What are you currently working on? What other releases do you have planned?

I’ve just this week finished writing my next book, which is about a couple of friends who go to work for a family who live in a big beautiful house overlooking the ocean in Cornwall. It’s sunny, seasidey and contains more secrets than you can shake a stick at!

Thanks for blogging at HJ!

Is there ever a perfect time for love?

When Mimi Huish first visits her dad’s new home in the Cotswolds, she falls in love with Goosebrook and the people who live there. There’s Paddy, with his electric-blue eyes and seductive charm. Friendly and funny Lois makes Mimi laugh. And seriously gorgeous Cal Mathieson is welcoming and charismatic. Though Mimi loves her city life and her career, she’d be very happy to return to Goosebrook if it means seeing more of him.

Life is about to take some unexpected and shocking twists and turns. And Mimi’s path and Cal’s are set to cross again and again—but will it ever be the right time for both of them?

    Just 1?

Most of all I’d like to visit Lake District’s National Park and tour the beautiful countryside and visit where Beatrix Potter lived.

Then I’d like to visit Oxford and Cambridge colleges.

I’d like to visit Stratford-upon-Avon, England where William Shakespeare lived and Anne Hathaway’s cottage can be seen. I’d like to tour a castle too.

  4. Fiona Goundry

I’m not sure. Maybe Liverpool where the Beatles started. Or the Highlands, thinking Pride and Prejudice.

  6. Trudy Dowling

I would love to go the Tower of London and actually go inside instead of taking pictures of the exterior. Last time I went my aunt refused to go in because the cost was “to dear”.

  7. Terrill R.

I would prefer to visit small coastal towns and rural areas. I like staying out of tourist hotspots.
