Today it is my pleasure to Welcome author Laura Griffin to HJ!
Hi Laura and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, Midnight Dunes!
Please summarize the book for the readers here:
Midnight Dunes is the story of Macey Burns, who moves to Lost Beach after a scandal derails her television career. When a body is discovered in the sand dunes near her house, Macey gets pulled into the murder investigation being led by Detective Owen Breda.
Readers have been asking me about Owen since he first appeared in Flight, and it was fun to finally write his story!
Please share your favorite line(s) or quote from this book:
“Her new endeavor demanded her full attention, which meant she didn’t have time for dating and flirting and smooth-talking detectives with ocean-blue eyes.”
“She looked out at the beach, thinking about her mother’s voice and her laugh and how she used to hold her dad’s free hand when he was driving. They had been in love. It was something Macey knew, deep in her bones.”
Please share a few Fun facts about this book…
I love writing stories set in Lost Beach, the coastal island that is the backdrop for Flight and my current work in progress. To get in the mood of this setting, I like to listen to island music and I find myself craving beachy cocktails, too. Macey’s favorite drink is a Cape Cod made with Tito’s vodka, and I’ve included the recipe in the Book Club Kit.
What first attracts your Hero to the Heroine and vice versa?
Owen is immediately attracted to Macey because she’d bold and opinionated, and she isn’t at all intimidated that he is a cop. With her background as an investigative reporter, Macey isn’t afraid to ask questions and she follows her curiosity wherever it leads. Despite Owen’s job in law enforcement, he has a rebellious streak that Macey discovers and finds irresistible.
Did any scene have you blushing, crying or laughing while writing it? And Why?
The scene that comes to mind is the first time Owen meets Macey in the daylight, while she is supposedly out for a run. I love it because you can tell right away that he is wildly attracted to her even though he knows she is lying to him:
Owen stared down at her. Macey Burns was getting on his nerves, and he was pretty sure she knew it.
The last time he’d seen her she’d been rain-soaked and skittish. Now she was flushed-cheeked and pushy, asking a bunch of questions that he wasn’t about to answer.
She gazed up at him with those big green eyes all wide and innocent, like he hadn’t caught her snooping around an active crime scene. He could have arrested her, or at least threatened to, but he had about a thousand other things that needed his attention right now. Which made him wonder why the hell he was wasting his time standing here in the blazing sun.
Readers should read this book….
… if they like a story that weaves together suspense and sexual tension. When they are not busy trying to unravel the mystery, Macey and Owen are discovering their attraction to each other, so the story pace keeps moving. That’s what I love about writing romantic thrillers!
What are you currently working on? What other releases do you have in the works?
I just put the finishing touches on Vanishing Hour, which comes out in the fall. It’s a standalone romantic thriller set in the rugged West Texas landscape near Big Bend. The story involves a search-and-rescue dog, which was so much fun to write about!
Also, I’m in the midst of writing Deep Tide, the next book in the Texas Murder Files series following Midnight Dunes. This story is set in Lost Beach as well and focuses on Owen’s sister, Leyla Breda.
Thanks for blogging at HJ!

Book Info:
When the shocking discovery of a murdered woman’s body disturbs the tranquility of tourist season, the police detective in charge of the puzzling case must work alongside the new filmmaker in town to pursue every lead in the new romantic thriller from New York Times bestselling author Laura Griffin.
After a scandal derails her television reporting career, Macey Burns comes looking for a change of pace in Lost Beach, Texas. She’s ready to focus on her first passion—documentary filmmaking—and has a new job working for the island’s tourism board, shooting footage of the idyllic beachside community. Her plans for a relaxing rebound are dashed when she realizes the cottage she’s renting belonged to the woman whose body was just found in the sand dunes.
Detective Owen Breda is under intense pressure to solve this murder. Violent crimes are rising in his small town, and he can’t stand to see anyone else hurt…especially not the beautiful documentarian who keeps showing up at the precinct.
With the clock ticking, cameras rolling, and body count climbing, Macey and Owen must use all their resources to find the killer without getting caught in the crosshairs.

The last book I read, I enjoyed – The Amish Wedding Quilt by Winnie Griggs. I needed something calming. Now I am looking for a good suspense.
