Spotlight&Giveaway

Hi Abigail and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, The Traitor!

Thank so much for having me! I always love visiting HJ!!!

Please summarize the book a la Twitter style for the readers here:

Rune is the most wanted dragon in the western hemisphere, in hiding with a bounty on his head. So of course that’s when the most enticing woman he’s ever met barges into his mountain, demanding his help.

Please share the opening lines of this book:

A rough hand shook Hadyn Reece awake. In an instant she was alert, eyes connecting with those of her adoptive father, Chaghan.
“They’ve come. We need to move fast,” he whispered. Hardly a sound. Which meant he was worried that whoever was out there was a shifter whose enhanced hearing might pick up the words.
Fear spiked through her heart like a dragonsteel harpoon, but she’d been preparing for this most of her life.

Please share a few Fun facts about this book…

  • An antihero dragon shifter who is a trouble magnet.
  • A bad-ass sunshine heroine who gives him hell.
  • The dragon shifter system is starting to crumble.
  • What happens after this in the Inferno Rising series?
  • The end of the series (and my personal favorite).

What first attracts your Hero to the Heroine and vice versa?

Rune is initially attracted to Hadyn because she’s not afraid of him. He has a reputation, but her determination to get his help has made her set that aside.

Hadyn can see quickly that under the angry dragon shifter exterior is the heart of a man who has spent all this time protecting the innocent.

Using just 5 words, how would you describe Hero and Heroine’s love affair?

off-limits & off the charts.

The First Kiss…

“Damn,” the word wasn’t angry, the tone more desperate than that. “Forgive me for this.”
For what?
His hands moved to either side of her face, fingers digging into her hair. “This will all be over in a second, little mortal.”
A tiny blaze of twin silver-tipped black flames flared then blinked out. As though he’d brought his fire forward and closed his eyes to hide the light. Then heat. Beautiful heat flowed from his touch, from those strong hands holding her steady. Warmth invaded her mind and then seeped into her muscles, like liquid courage, and suddenly Hadyn was here in the cave with him.
No longer in her head. Her memories, gone.
Logically, she knew what he was doing. Stealing her memories. Not the original ones. Her dragon parents had tried to do that already to stop nightmares and panic attacks. This was different. Almost like he was erasing the memory of her fear in this moment.
Every muscle in her body went languid. Lusciously loose.
She sucked in and opened her mouth to say something probably pretty damn stupid. Something like golly gee. Or oh wow.
Which was how she found herself kissing Rune Abaddon.
Warm lips pressed to hers gently, the action a part of the warmth still cocooning her that she didn’t even protest. She just sort of…sank into him.

Without revealing too much, what is your favorite scene in the book?

Oh gosh, that’s hard to say. I have several. LOL. I love the way they meet. That entire scene was a hoot to write. I also love the scene on the boat which gets nice and steamy, but of course interrupted.

If your book was optioned for a movie, what scene would be absolutely crucial to include?

All of them? LOL.

Since this is the last book which is tying up a ton of loose ends, most of the scenes are pretty important. But honestly all of the scenes where Rune and Hadyn interact. Their exchanges are part of what makes this book my favorite in the series, I think.

Readers should read this book …

If you love dragon shifters who are bad-ass, and heroines who put them in their place. If you love terrific steamy romance. If you love action, adventure, and a lot of flying lizards who breath fire.

What are you currently working on? What other releases do you have planned?

As always, a ton of things in the hopper including…

The Cursed King – the last book in the spinoff Inferno Rising series is set for release in September!
The Queen is Dead – an upper YA high fantasy (look for more on that later)!

Excerpt from The Traitor:

Her mouth dropped open slightly. “You went rogue on a hunch?”
The sudden urge to shuffle his feet only made him sit more still.
She wasn’t done. “Then you took all those mates to keep them safe.”
Not a question, but a statement. The tone in her voice—a quiet respect—had him scowling, mostly as he tried to control his own body’s response which was an instant, driving urge to claim all that trust with kisses that would lead to a hell of a lot more. “I’m no saint.”
Hadyn snorted. “Who said you were, hot shot?”
“I’m no hot shot either,” he insisted darkly.
She barked a laugh at that. “Have you looked in the mirror?”
She found him attractive?
That piece of information hit him with all the subtlety of a wrecking ball to the face. What would she do if he stopped this boat and took the opportunity to lose himself in her body, see what noises she made in pleasure, bleed off the tension of the last few days?
“Don’t worry,” she teased, laughter lining the words. “I won’t jump you or anything. You’re not my type.”
An odd sort of calm settled over Rune, and a sense of knowing quieted his mind. When that happened—almost like a tic—he knew the words coming at him were lies. Which meant he was her type, but she didn’t want to admit it. Maybe even to herself. Dark satisfaction surged into that quiet of knowing.
Because he wanted this woman.
In a primitive, need to go up in flames together, kind of way. Not forever, just…
“But you do find me attractive,” he said in a slow, deliberate cadence.
“I guess most women find tall, dark, and ripped hideous,” she said almost conversationally. “I’m an odd duck that way.”
Her bright sarcasm only made him want this more. “So if I offered physical passion—a no strings, make you see stars situation—what would you say?”
He backed the throttle off, letting the boat coast to a stop on its own. No worries about them hitting anything out here. Then he turned to face her, letting her see the flames in his eyes at the mere thought of her saying yes.

Book Info:

Burn it all down.

Decades ago, rogue dragon shifter Rune Abaddon took a stand against the decaying, corrupt systems governing their people. He now uses his bad-ass reputation to protect the innocent as it all comes crashing down. But he’s pushed the limits one too many times. His hideout is destroyed, his few allies are scattered and hiding, and the Alliance has placed a dead-or-alive bounty on his head, making him the most wanted dragon in the western hemisphere.

And then the most enticing woman he’s ever met barges into his mountain, demanding an audience.

Hadyn Reece’s future was ripped away long ago. The man fated to be her mate was murdered alongside her parents before Hadyn was old enough to be turned, leaving her to be raised and trained by her dead mate’s parents in the dragon shifter world. Now, the Alliance has come for the only family she has left. It’s a good thing she was raised by dragons, because the only one who can help her save them is a traitor she’d be smart to fear.

Especially when his dragon decides she’s theirs.

I think it is because dragons are mythical creatures. They aren’t anything we have ever experienced in our lives and they are intriguing animals.

    • Shannon Capelle

I think its because we havent seen one so their mystical and magical

  2. Glenda M

They are mythical creatures and totally ingrained in our subconscious – like unicorns only way cooler. They don’t run or fly from the innocent, so in theory we all have the chance of getting up close and personal. With luck it’ll be a kind dragons who doesn’t want to turn us to charcoal.

People are fascinated with dragons because dragons are majestic creatures. They are powerful, fearless, and are important in the mythology of many cultures.

  5. Kim

I don’t know if I would say I’m fascinated by dragons. But I will say I’m curious about them. Some are beautiful and I do want to understand them.

  6. Tammy VanScoy

I like them because they can be all types, water, fire, and others.
