In Silver Skin (Cold Iron #2) by D.L. McDermott, Helene Whitney’s view on the Fae is a bit clouded thanks to her horrifying experiences with them over the past several months. But when she begins to lose chunks of time and can’t account for what she was doing, she knows she will have to turn to Fae sorcerer Miach MacCecht for help. Not only does she wonder if she can trust Miach with her unique situation, but she’s also very much attracted to him. Helene doesn’t know if it’s just his Fae magic that compels her or if there is really something between them. But she can’t let it interrupt her SS4search for whoever is responsible for the strange changes recently in her life.

‘She had seen the worst of his kind–in some ways, the worst of him–and she still wanted him.’

Fae sorcerer Miach MacCecht has been alive for almost thirty-five hundred years. He’s spent millennia fighting the Druids and unfortunately it appears it won’t be stopping anytime soon. His checkered past in Boston has given him a lot of resources at his disposal which comes in handy when Helene appears at his door. Miach’s been keeping an eye on her from afar but now he has to come face-to-face with the woman who intrigues and stirs him up more than anyone else has in a long time. Trouble is following close behind her as they attempt to find the source of her missing time. With lives on the line, Miach tries to push his attraction for Helene aside but it may prove to be too much even for his self-control.

“I don’t know what the future will bring, Helene. There’s a fight coming, and I’m committed to it, and if you fall in love with me, you’ll be dragged into it. Only you can decide whether I’m worth it or not.”

Silver Skin was a very enjoyable Fantasy/Paranormal novel centered around the Fae, their enemies the Druids, and their seemingly eternal fighting.

I jumped into book two before reading book one, Cold Iron, which meant it was a bit involved at first, getting used to the characters and how everything “works” in their world. But author D.L. McDermott did a great job bringing in snippets from the previous novel to give a full background on where Helene, Miach, Beth and Conn have been and why they are in the predicament they find themselves in now. I got really caught up in the plotline as there was so much action plus the mystery of who was stealing time from Helene. I thought this was very smartly written, with attention to details, interesting dialogue, and well-rounded characters I can’t wait to read more about in future books.

I was surprised I actually liked Miach as much as I did. Usually the Fae are depicted in most novels as meddlesome, tricky and untrustworthy, which, okay…Miach was kind of like a mobster in a way. But, he treated Helene very well this time around. (Not so much in book one from the sound of it.) Miach knew his powers well as a Fae sorcerer and could use them accordingly. So he was willing to help Helene with her situation even though it might have put him in danger. And I understood where she was coming from in her reluctance to ask the Fae for help. Helene had been warned against trusting them, rightly so, but Miach was a bit of an exception. I really enjoyed their conversations where they were both such strong individuals. It kept the scenes moving along at a good pace and lent some atmosphere to the story as well.

I think fans of both Fantasy and Paranormal will get sucked into this intriguing novel. I’m looking forward to Stone Song which should be out in June 2014.

Helene Whitney has been losing time. Not losing track of time, but missing hours, finding whole blank spaces in her day she can’t account for. A year ago she would have put it down to overwork and exhaustion, but that was before she found out about the Good Neighbors, the Fair Folk, the Beautiful People, the Fae.

Ancient, immortal, tricksy and cruel, these creatures out of myth and legend rule the Irish enclaves of South Boston and Charlestown, and one of them has been using magic to abduct and control Helene for hours every day, gaining access to the collection at her museum and searching for ancient objects of Fae power.

Now, Helene’s only hope of escaping this unknown assailant lies with the Fae sorcerer, Miach MacCecht, a man she knows she can never trust—and who may prove impossible to resist.
