In Something More Than This by Barbie Bohrman, sports reporter Something-More-Than-ThisKaty Lewis receives a surprise call from her childhood best friend and unrequited love, Conner, who she hadn’t spoken to in almost nine years. He’s back in town and he wants to reconnect with her, thinking maybe they can act on the feelings she had for him all those years ago.

Katy likes the idea of being with Conner, but when a co-worker starts flirting with Dylan Sterling, one of her good friends as well as her boss, Katy feels something she didn’t expect–jealously. She never looked at Dylan as more than a friend before, but now she’s seeing him in a different light.

Katy reminded me of a child who only wants something because someone else has it. Not once did she look at Dylan as more than a friend until Rachel makes her move on him. Katy’s friend, Mimi, as well as her brothers all knew how Dylan felt about her, but she never realized it. Dylan, for his part, never really told Katy how he felt. He claims he did once, but it had been years ago and he was drunk at the time so she didn’t know what he was talking about. Maybe if he just confessed how he felt, while sober, a lot of the drama and misunderstandings could have been avoided.

Conner was an ok character for me. I didn’t like the way he initially left Katy nine years prior just after she confessed how she felt about him. I didn’t understand why he suddenly decided he wanted to try to start a relationship with her. They weren’t the same people they were before, yet he assumes she would still feel the same way about him. To top it off, he was only going to be in town a couple of weeks. I’m not sure what type of relationship he thought was going to be able to develop in such a short period of time.

By the end of the book, I didn’t really care who she ended up with. Both men had their faults and could have handled things better with Katy. And the back and forth Katy had going on about deciding between the two was tiring. Even when she realizes she might have feelings for Dylan, she still continues to see Conner. It was as if she was chasing the past instead of looking towards the future.

This was an ok read for me. I liked parts of it, but others left me annoyed and wondering what any of the characters saw in each other.

Katy Lewis has it all: a sports reporting job she loves, a great roommate, and two brothers who, while nosy, always have her back. But when Conner Roberts, Katy’s unrequited first crush, suddenly shows up—and shows interest—after nine years, she reverts to a sweaty, panicked sixteen-year-old once more.

And if trying to read Conner’s signals isn’t tough enough, Katy’s heart is sending some mixed messages of its own. When a beautiful blonde coworker starts pursuing Katy’s boss, Dylan Sterling—her longtime mentor and friend—she realizes she may have a problem with that. A reunion with Conner is what she’s dreamed of for so long…so why can’t she stop thinking about Dylan?

For the first time ever, Katy must fact-check her heart. Should she go after the guy she thought she always wanted or see if there’s something more with the one who’s been there all along?
