In A Forever Family for the Army Doc (The Halliday Family #1) by Meredith Webber, things that he witnessed during his time in the Army haunt him and now that he’s back to civilian life, all Nicholas ‘Mac’ MacPherson wants is to concentrate on his job as the new Wetherby hospital director. However, he never expected to meet a woman that could capture his attention as much as Izzy Halliday does. But with his first marriage being a disaster, can he trust that his growing relationship with Izzy will not end up the same?

Then Mac was right behind her, peering into the cupboard, examining its contents, taking his cue from her — now totally professional.
“I have had a look inside these cupboards and the refrigerators but, as yet, couldn’t put my hand on anything.”
“Which is why you have staff,” Izzy told him, so rattled by his presence she was shaking.
“Staff I can put my hand on?” he teased, touching her lightly on the shoulder. Not quite professional.

What a really good read Ms. Webber has penned in this first book of her Halliday family, which encompassed a sexy ex-military hero haunted by what he’s witnessed, a heroine that doesn’t date because she doesn’t want to bring a man into her daughter’s life that won’t stick around, secondary characters that want Izzy to find love and a final plot twist that had me cheering for this couple’s happy ever after because it could bring them closer together. The way this story opened was interesting due to the situation Mac and Izzy find themselves in. Being a nurse and a doctor, both are determined to save whoever they can. Can they save their patient in this moment?

The dialogue was entertaining, and I loved the Halliday family, especially Izzy’s mother and daughter. They both want the heroine to be happy, and encourage her relationship with Mac by matchmaking or giving advice. The dialogue was also a nice blend of intense and playful; intense due to the main characters back stories and the medical cases these two have to handle. Izzy made a bad judgment in getting involved with a co-worker before, which didn’t end well for her, and she’s wary to make the same mistake again. Will she give Mac a chance? What if she does and things go south? However, despite the intense dialogue, there were also some light-hearted moments between the hero and heroine, because Mac is persistent in his pursuit after he realizes how much Izzy is coming to mean to him.

”So you never dated?” Blue eyes dared her not to answer.
“Are you always this persistent?” she demanded, “But if you must know, yes, I did — well occasionally. Then—“
“Then? And, yes, I am always this persistent.”

Both the main characters were really good, and the hero had me captivated with his point-of-view. He’s struggling with dreams of things he’s witnessed in the past, and I could sympathize with him when things that happen around him throughout this story remind him of such times. He’s also hard-working and a man that deserves a second chance at forever after his failed marriage. If his wife could do to him what she did while he was in the military, then she didn’t deserve such a kind, caring and loyal man. While the heroine, she’s strong and brave, considering everything she’s been through and it’s understandable that she’s wary of relationships. The bond she and her daughter have is delightful, and I liked that she would do anything for the young girl.

Overall, this book started this series off really well, and I loved the growing relationship between Izzy and Mac. He needs her just as much as she needs him, especially when they discover what Mac’s relationship to a secondary character is. The way this story ended had me cheering for this couple’s happy ever after, because the plot twist made it palpable these two are meant to be. I would recommend A Forever Family for the Army Doc by Meredith Webber, if you enjoy the fake relationship trope or a story where the hero and heroine are meant to be.

As a reviewer, we have a limit to how many sentences we can use for our quotes. That may be the reason why the dialogue seems a bit strange. It was a good book though.
