In A Risk Worth Taking (The Legionnaires #3) by Brynn Kelly, It’s safe to say that just about every Legionnaire Jamie Armstrong knows is running from a past they’d rather forget. Himself included. He left Scotland and his career in medicine behind to become his team’s medic on their never-ending missions. His newest assignment is one that while dangerous and ambitious as always, it’s also more personal. Jamie is sent to keep Samira Desta, a hacker with important information and connections, safe. Easier said than done while they traipse across Europe and the UK with bad guys right on their heels. The biggest hurdle, though, is for Jamie to face down both his feelings for Samira that have grown since their blissful night together a few months ago, and to admit to the mistakes that checkered his past and led him to join the Legion in the first place.

“It’s not wrong to move on, Samira.”
She looked up at him, hope lighting her expression.
“When you find the right guy,” he added, quickly. “You don’t need to forget your fiance in order to do that. But first we need to finish this and give you the freedom to seek that happiness again.”

Losing her fiance almost two years ago broke Samira’s heart and her spirit. And sadly due to the dangerous secrets her fiance uncovered, it’s also forced her into hiding, trying to stay one step ahead of those willing to kill her to get the info Latif was rumored to have. Being on the run is not a comfortable place for Samira. She’s a homebody who deals with virtual reality. But the real world slaps her in the face when she’s once again on the lam and saved by none other than Jamie. She didn’t know if they’d ever cross paths again since that fateful (and sensual) night they spent together a short while back. Between the guilt of trying to move on from her loss and knowing she and Jamie are complete opposites, Samira didn’t hold out hope for them from the start. Although the more she spends time with him as they battle the goons hot on their trail, she has to admit that it might be worth trying. As long as Jamie plans to stick around.

‘Safe. How weird was that–she felt safe, even as she was doing the riskiest hack of her life? Had to be the Jamie effect. Who could fail to feel safe in his company?’

A mile-a-minute thrill ride that had my heart pounding as well as breaking for our lovebirds, A Risk Worth Taking was romantic suspense done absolutely, wonderfully right.

‘He really was her polar opposite. Still, a man composed enough to make jokes while fleeing bad guys was a man she wanted on her team.’

From the very first book I read by Brynn Kelly (Deception Island) I was hooked on her style of writing. Gritty, emotional, exciting and full of vivid details, she brings each story and her memorable cast of characters to life on the pages. Now you can read each book in this series on their own, but I really think once you read one you won’t stop until you’ve made your way through every action-packed moment. And let me tell you, the plot twists were phenomenal in this installment, as was the oh-so right romance between Samira and Jamie.

Usually in most romances it’s either the hero *or* the heroine who is the so-called tortured character. In this case, both Jamie and Samira had their own harrowing pasts to deal with while they were being chased across the world and slowly but surely falling in love. I liked that Brynn Kelly wasn’t afraid to show Samira and Jamie as flawed individuals. Although it was nice that for the most part they tried to help each other and kind of boosted each other however they could.

I completely commiserated with Samira’s anxiety issues and her introverted ways. It was interesting to see how her confidence built when she used her hacking skills, something she was comfortable with. And hunky Scotsman Jamie was at home with anything adrenaline related: as a medic, as a soldier in the Legion, everything that required thinking on his feet. It was the emotional bits that gave Samira and Jamie the most difficulty. They both fought it for quite a while, but I loved the way things worked out and how right it all felt at the end.

The Legionnaires series has only gotten better and more intense with each new book and each unique couple we’ve met. But Samira and Jamie just might be my favorite of the bunch. I so look forward to whatever Brynn Kelly has up her sleeve next for her fans.

I think you’d really like Brynn Kelly’s writing style, Teresa. Very dramatic but lots of emotions as well. 🙂
