LJ Evans has written an emotional, very interesting story in this book, Avenged by Love.
One thing Jersey and Truck have in common is their love and caring for their siblings. Jersey has her sixteen-year-old sister to take care of. Violet has had her spleen removed and needs to take daily doses of antibiotics. Fortunately she has health coverage through a state program for children under eighteen. Jersey does not have health insurance.
Truck’s brother Dawson is twenty-two but unhappily moved in with Truck following getting into trouble because he had been drinking and then was involved in an accident while racing boats. Now Jersey has been diagnosed with endometriosis which could possibly lead to adenomyosis which is where the endometrial tissue grows into the wall of the uterus. Not good. But Jersey doesn’t have the money to go see a specialist about her condition. Truck learns about Jersey’s problem when Violet calls him in the middle of the night to rush Jersey off to the ER.
The interesting part of this story is that it is so-called irresponsible Dawson who comes up with a solution. Since Truck has excellent medical insurance Dawson suggests Truck and Jersey get married so Jersey can have insurance to cover her medical bills. Truck cares about Jersey so he is all in with that idea. Not so fast with Jersey though. It takes Truck getting Jersey drunk and suggesting they write up a contract to cover this marriage-in-name-only to get Jersey to agree. The next morning it’s down to city hall and they get married. The crazy contract indicates no kissing, no sex, no living together. This can’t last.
This is a very well-written story with in-depth characters and events that pull you into the story. I enjoyed getting to meet these characters. L.J. Evans is a new author to me and has provided a different reading experience for me from what I am used to.

“Love is the only real superpower.”
Travis, a.k.a., Truck, Dayton is focused on two things: settling into his position at the Coast Guard Academy and helping his younger brother stay out of trouble. So even though the beautiful, pixie-like apparition, Jersey Banner, is tugging at his chest in funny ways, he doesn’t intend on acting on those emotions. Not when he’ll eventually be moving on, and she’ll be staying behind.
But when Jersey suddenly finds herself in desperate need of medical care that she can’t afford, Truck does the only thing he can think of to help… he marries her.
Jersey has been struggling to keep her and her sister afloat ever since their dad was sent to jail. The pain she feels on a regular basis isn’t anything she can stop to think about until she ends up at the E.R. in the protective arms of the one man who makes her pulse beat faster than the superheroes she worships.
When chaos reigns down on their lives, their temporary deal starts to crumble, leaving hearts and souls twined together in such a way that there’s little chance of escape without permanent damage. Unless they just surrender to it all and let love heal them both.
From award-winning author, LJ Evans, comes a novel inspired by Lady Antebellum’s “Ocean” about resilience and love. You don’t want to miss this slow burn, military romance.
Author’s Note: Protective, noble Coast Guard. Nerdy, quirky, invisible heroine. Heart tugging words and slow, simmering attraction. Fake marriage, broken promises, and happiness you’ll feel in your bones.
