In Call Me, Maybe by Ellie Cahill, ever since making a stupid mistake years ago; Clementine Daly’s powerful, wealthy family has not let her live it down. Especially since her mistake almost brought an embarrassing scandal on her family, if her grandparents hadn’t handled the situation with hush money. Now though, with her family pressuring her to discover what she wants to do with her life, she’s forced to accompany her brother on family business. But when a mix-up at the airport lands her with a stranger’s phone and vice versa, the error could be the beginning of a wonderful relationship between the pair. If only she didn’t feel the need to lie about everything.
He exhaled into the microphone. “I wish we’d actually met at the airport.”
“Why’s that?”
“Because I’m pretty sure I would have asked for your number, and now I’ll never know if you’re only talking to me because you feel bad that you stole my phone.”
Was that a line? I couldn’t tell. “Oh, come on. I’m sure you say that to all the girls who fall on top of you and nearly break your laptop.”
Although this book started off a bit slow, the moment that Clementine and Justin realize they have each other’s phones, it became a real page turner, even though Clementine was digging herself deeper and deeper into a hole – so to speak – for lying to him. But that’s what made this book so interesting for me. Because I knew the lie was eventually going to blow up in Clementine’s face, and I really wanted to know how things would play out to break her and Justin up. How would he learn the truth? When he did, what would his reaction be?
I liked both characters, although Clementine did annoy me at times. It seemed she hadn’t learned from the mistake she made years ago, since she was determined to repeat it. Luckily, Justin is an honorable guy. Otherwise she could have found herself caught in another almost embarrassing scandal that her grandparents might not have been able to protect her from. Besides that, she was a good heroine. I enjoyed the close relationship she has with her siblings, because they put things into perspective when she’s finding things hard to deal with. Especially things that have to do with the other members of their family such as their absent parents. She’s also protective of her family, and that’s one of the main reasons why she feels she needs to lie to Justin. Because it’s hard to trust someone completely when they could easily turn around and betray her.
”Do you think they’ll ever trust me again?”
“It was just at stupid mistake, Clem. You were nineteen, and nothing even came of it. I don’t know why you stress so much about it.”
He didn’t get it. No one got it. No one could see that my entire life revolved around that one stupid mistake.
As for the dialogue, Justin and Clementine’s intimate and flirty texts/phone conversations definitely kept me entertained, and eager to see how their relationship would progress once they finally meet face-to-face. And when they do, the teasing dialogue between them continued to ramp up the sexual tension, which spilled over onto the pages in nicely-detailed sex scenes. Justin is so open and honest, and that’s what I liked so much about him. Because he wants Clementine in his life, and is determined to prove she can trust him.
Overall, this was a good story, even though I thought Justin over-reacted a tad when he learned about Clementine’s duplicity. Not allowing her to explain when she had a valid reason. Yet, the way the heroine wins the hero back was wonderful. As it was a way to get him to come and see her face-to-face, even if it was a bit of a devious way that could have backfired. Besides, it gave her the chance to come clean. To give him the truth to everything he wants to know about her. I would recommend Call Me Maybe by Ellie Cahill, if you enjoy Cinderella type stories.

Clementine Daly knows she’s the black sheep. Her wealthy, powerful family has watched her very closely since she almost got caught in an embarrassing scandal a few years ago. So when Clementine’s sent on a mission to live up to the Daly name, politely declining isn’t even an option. Of course, the last thing Clementine does before departure is grab a stranger’s phone by mistake—leaving the hunky journalist with her phone. Soon his sexy voice is on the line, but he doesn’t know her real name, or her famous pedigree—which is just the way Clementine likes it.
Despite all the hassles, Justin Mueller is intrigued to realize that the beautiful brown-eyed girl he met at the airport is suddenly at his fingertips. They agree to exchange phones when they’re both back in town, but after a week of flirty texts and wonderfully intimate conversations, Justin doesn’t want to let her go that easy. The only problem? It turns out that Clemetine has been lying to him about, well, everything. Except for the one thing two people can’t fake, the only thing that matters: The heat between them is for real.

Thanks, Bec – it sounds like a good read. Can I ask why you only gave it 3.5 stars? Was there something specific, or it was just generally only a 3.5 for you?
Bec
There was nothing specific. If there’s something I don’t enjoy about a book, I’ll let readers know in my review. 3.5 stars means it was a good book, and that’s really all I could give it.
