REVIEW: Forbidden Fling With Dr. Right by JC Harroway

Forbidden Fling With Dr. Right by JC Harroway is a nice medical romance story. Darcy Wright is Dr. Joe Austin’s new registrar. From day one, both collide while attracting each other. Because Darcy’s stay in the hospital is temporary, they embark on a fleeting romance, but will it be enough? Especially when dormant emotions due to the tragic events of their past begin to awaken and love unexpectedly arises…

Joe lives tormented by the guilt of the tragedy that led him to lose what he loved most, his daughter and his marriage. Darcy, for her part, has always been rejected by her biological father, which marks her for life by making her a bit insecure at times.

Darcy and Joe are identical in almost everything: their vocation and total dedication to the job to the point that it is their only priority, their stubbornness, their strong personalities, their insistence on staying emotionally disconnected. In short, they are the last of the other’s shoe. Both have faced pain, guilt and seek to stay away from any feeling that causes hope in their lives so they wouldn’t get hurt. This is why their mutual attraction rises to extraordinary levels and the chemistry between them works wonders. Undoubtedly, the best of the book are these characters so well defined and developed.

Apart from that, the story has excellent secondary characters, of which I would have preferred that they had more presence in the plot. In particular, Joe’s ex-wife Laura. Although I admit that Laura and Joe’s last interaction was brilliant, I was left wanting to know a little more about her, or to see them together. Without overshadowing the main characters—meaning Darcy specifically and her relationship with Joe—of course.

This is Ms. Harroway’s first book for Harlequin Medical Romance. And it shows that she still retains the style that she used in the books she wrote for Harlequin DARE (whose format is more sexy and spicy). In the first half of the book, everything seems moved by sexual attraction, which is why the reading was a bit unbalanced and loses the essence of the main theme: two people who have suffered and the way in which they manage to overcome the demons of the past to finally be happy. Mind you, the writing is clever and the medical scenes—it’s Harlequin Medical Romance, hello!—are wonderful. In addition, its end is very beautiful as Darcy and Joe deserved.
