REVIEW: Forever My Hero by Sharon Sala

In Forever My Hero by Sharon Sala, former attorney turned rental property manager Dan Amos lost his wife and child years ago when in an explosion meant for him. Alice lost her husband in a meth explosion, leaving her alone to raise their two children. The pair are attracted to each other, but when an impending hurricane throws them together, will they be able to put their pasts behind them and give love another chance?

My issue with the book is that within the first few pages, readers are inundated with multiple characters doing multiple things. The bouncing around was too much for my liking, and if people are new to the series, being bombarded with so many characters at once will probably confuse them. I wasn’t sure who the book was actually about until it started to focus on Dan and Alice. The book then splits its time between Dan and Alice’s budding relationship, the hurricane that hits the town and how it effects the residents, and the attack on Elliot, and elderly painter living in one of the rentals Dan manages.

I liked Dan and Alice as a couple. Both of them lost their spouses in a similar way, so they understood each other, their pain, and their hesitation to try again. Dan is wonderful to not only Alice, but to her two children, as well. He’s also great with Elliot, taking him in after he’s released from the hospital so he won’t have to go through the hurricane alone.

I wasn’t overly crazy with how the story line about Elliot’s attack ended up. It was clear that one of the people involved felt remorse and I would have liked to have seen him make amends instead of how it ended up. For the record, readers know from the get-go who was involved in the attack; it’s only a mystery to the townspeople.

I liked the book, but I felt like there was just too much going on with all the other characters. I haven’t read the other books in the series so I don’t know if they all jump around to the other townspeople like this one does, but I would have rather have seen it concentrate more on Dan and Alice. Even the story of Elliot’s attack felt like it was taking away from developing Dan and Alice’s relationship. I would say this book is for readers who enjoy small town romances.
