In Grave Destiny (Alex Craft #6) by Kalayna Price, war is on the horizon for the various fey courts and there may be only one person who can stop it and that person is Alex Craft. So, when the prince of the Shadow Court; the same prince Alex is supposedly betrothed to comes to her for help, Alex agrees. Although, she’s reluctant to get involved, especially when she’s already somewhat aligned with another of the courts – the Winter Court. However, the more she uses her unique power to raise shades and discover the truth behind the murders she’s been asked to investigate, the more someone believes she’s a threat to their plans. Will Alex survive the final battle or go down trying to save the fey from declaring war on each other?
Dugan frowned at me. “You really don’t like dead bodies, do you?”
“No. I don’t. Does anyone?”
He considered that, opened his mouth, likely to mention any number of disturbed conditions people might have, but at my glare he smiled. “It just seems detrimental to have such a strong aversion considering your profession.”
I shrugged. “I work through it. And up until six months ago, it wasn’t an issue. I never dealt with murder scenes, or weird unexplainable conditions with corpses, or having to carry bodies. I met with clients and the bodies were already nice and buried, or in coffins, or occasionally body bags at the morgue.” I turned to Falin. “You know, it was the day I met you that things all went FUBAR.”
I have really enjoyed this series right from the beginning because the heroine has been torn between two men – Death and Falin – until recently. Yet, now though, she’s just trying to live a normal life. Well, as normal a life as it is for someone with her ability to raise shades and having to interact with the fey world. Will her life ever go back to the way it was? The way this story started had me intrigued, especially because of the investigation she gets pulled into and the way one of the heroine’s men interact with the new man in her life; a new man that seems to be someone that thinks he can use her for his own personal gain. Will the heroine ever be free of the men in her life, especially Dugan with his claim about her being an important part of his life?
The dialogue was riveting and intense due to the heroine’s back story, her abilities that make her a powerful ally to anyone that needs her services and the twists and turns this story takes to getting to the bottom of the murders that have occurred. Will the heroine come out on top against such powerful adversaries? Moreover, the heroine is strong, brave and I liked how she doesn’t give up without a fight when things seem so bleak. I also like the close friendships she has and that her friends help her get through the darkest of times and are always there for her when she needs them. Then again, she’s lived through quite a few life or death situations and if it wasn’t for her friends she might not have survived.
Overall, Ms. Price has delivered a really good read in this book where the plot twists kept me wondering what would happen next and had me thinking the heroine might not come out of any battle unscathed. The way this story ended had me concerned for the heroine because of what’s happening to her. Will the heroine live to see another day? Will she finally be free of all her troubles, especially when it comes to the world of the fey since she’s a valuable asset to them? However, it was the final chapter that wraps this story up nicely and leaves things open for another book for the series, which I look forward to. I would recommend Grave Destiny by Kalayna Price, if you enjoy paranormal romance or books by authors Darynd Jones, Karen Chance, Ilona Andrews and Keri Arthur.
