Her Royal Protector (Johari Crown #1) by Alexandra Sellers: Scientist Aly Percy is so close to obtaining her doctorate and saving the Johari turtles she can almost taste it. She and her two colleagues, a husband and wife research team, are setting sail from the small country of Bagestan, to understand why this particular species of turtle from the area has become endangered. The many islands surrounding the country are home to these turtles as well, and they are also slowly disappearing from existence. When one of her colleagues becomes ill, they all decide that Aly will move forward with the research project alone, so that the turtles have a chance for survival and the grant money for the research is used properly. Since the government of Bagestan has a lot riding on the project, they are not keen on Aly traveling from royalisland to island by herself. Fortunately for Aly, she ends up going on the expedition with one of the hottest men she has ever seen, Sheikh Arif al Najimi, Cup Companion to His Royal Highness the Sultan, as well as the Sultan’s trusted expert responsible for the environmental matters of Bagestan.

There is something about Aly that the sheikh truly likes, which is odd because she is certainly not his type. The sheikh prefers the most gorgeous of the female population and Aly for the most part is considered average looking. However, she has determination, spunk, and stands up for herself, which the sheikh finds wildly alluring. Due to his good looks and charming personality, most women will do anything or be anything the sheikh needs at the time. Aly finds him incredibly attractive as well and daydreams about a potential sexual encounter with him quite often, however, her goals for herself supersede any whiff of a fling or romance. In addition, Aly does not believe she is attractive enough to warrant any physical attention from the sheikh. The sheikh is actually experiencing his own lustful feelings toward Aly.

The expedition brings Aly and the sheikh closer together and naturally being alone for an extended period of time evolves their relationship into much more than just environmental business.

This is an okay book that flows from beginning to end. The plot is original, but it did not really grab my attention or have any spark. I did like how Aly’s character developed from a wallflower into a desirable woman. I smiled from ear to ear as her confidence blossomed as she became confident with her personal self.

Aly Percy is her family’s ugly duckling, and she’s never been allowed to forget it. So she knows better than to imagine that Cup Companion Arif al Najimi’s blue gaze holds anything but contempt for her as a woman, or ever will. But if he’s offering to show her just how wild one night with him can be, wouldn’t she be a fool to turn down his charity? She may never get another offer like this one.

Arif al Najimi isn’t sure why he’s dreaming about the little scientist who’s so determined to take crazy risks for the sake of her research into the endangered turtles of his country. But as luck would have it, he’s going to get the chance to do a little research of his own…into the question of why Aly believes her own negative publicity about how desirable she is—and how hard it will be to convince her of the truth.
