Honky Tonk Hellion by Z.A. Maxfield: Andi always had big dreams of being a star and has the pipes to back it up. It’s taken her longer she ever expected to finally pursue her singing career, but she wouldn’t trade a moment for her precious 5-year-old son. She’s got big dreams, a big personality, plenty of charm, and feisty to boot. She’s also headstrong, rebellious, and prone to doing the opposite of what she’s told.

Malcolm is a lawyer with a fair amount of cowboy in him. He’s used to looking out for and protecting the interests of others, most especially Andi. He’s sexy, loyal, and has no game when it comes to pursuing the one woman he’s been in love with for years.

Andi always wanted Mal, but with their seven-year age difference, Mal couldn’t act on their attraction at the time. Now, he has settled for watching over her from afar as she’s a mom in an unconventional marriage. Turning her down set the tone for their somewhat contentious relationship, which is fraught with miscommunications and misunderstandings.

Andi gives a sniff. “Given the landscape lighting, I can find my own way.”
“Wait-” I can’t think of any good reason she shouldn’t go alone, I just don’t want to let her go. “There are feral cats out there.”
“I realize I’m only a girl”-she gives me the only look my statement deserves-“but I can probably take a feral cat.”

Andi is thrilled to finally have a shot to pursue her dream, but she struggles with how getting the career she’s dreamed of will impact the family she’s created for herself. Her world is thrown for a loop between having a chance to work with a famous musician and Mal finally pursuing her. Mal and Andi banter, challenge, and frustrate each other.

“Sing to me?”
“What?” She giggles wetly. “No.”
“I want to be the prince in your fairy tale, although I doubt I have the competence to rise above hired muscle. I want to be the guy who pushes your swing, Andi. Formal Job Application, right now. Interview me.”

Honky Tonk Hellion is entertaining with drama and angst. Z.A. Maxfield explores the issues of family, marriage, and the balance of your needs versus those of your family. Ms. Maxfield created an interesting, complicated, and surprising cast of characters. Fans of Lisa Marie Perry and Anna Zabo will enjoy Honky Tonk Hellion.
