In-Deep-with-the-FBI-AgentIn In Deep With the FBI Agent by Lynne Silver, Casey is working at her alma mater. When FBI agent Sam Cooper shows up in her office to discuss a cyber criminal hacking into the files of prestigious private schools, she immediately notices the difference between the scrawny boy who followed her everywhere in school to the man he has become. Sam has never forgotten Casey, and he’s determined to use the case to convince her to give him a chance.

I have mixed feelings about this one. I liked Sam; he was good at his job, there for his friends, and determined to win the woman he’s always loved. On the downside, however, is that he would still want Casey after the way she had treated him in high school. He would leave sweet notes for her in her locker; she would ignore them. He offered to dance with her at a dance when her date refused; she wouldn’t let him. Now, ten years later, she’s still trying to push him away and he still keeps coming back for more.

I found it much harder to like Casey. I did feel bad for her because her mother suffered from debilitating depression, but that didn’t excuse the way she treated people, especially Sam. This book contains flashbacks to situations that happened back when they were in school so readers get to see exactly what happened between them. In her quest to become popular, she basically treated people, especially Sam, terribly. Granted there were times she felt guilty about it, like when people in her “in crowd” were making fun of him, but she never stood up for him or anyone else. After reading how she treated him, it made it hard to understand why Sam always wanted her, and it made it difficult to find any sympathy for her.

While this could be considered romantic suspense, it leans more towards romance with a little suspense. The story mostly focused on Sam and Casey’s blooming relationship, with the hacker storyline being secondary to it. I figured out pretty quickly who the hacker was and was somewhat disappointed with the way that aspect of the story concluded. It wasn’t really explained why the man was hacking into the schools. Considering this was a good part of the story, I would have liked to have known why he did it and what he was getting out of it, only this is left unanswered.

This is the third book in the series but can be read as a stand alone. Characters from the previous books do make an appearance, but if you haven’t read them you won’t feel like you’re missing anything.

If you like your romance with a bit of suspense, this may be a book for you.

To Casey, Montgomery Prep isn’t just DC’s most prestigious private school-it’s her alma mater, the place where her fondest memories were made. It’s also her current employer and the target of a dangerous cyber criminal. But even more shocking than the crime is the sexy FBI agent who comes to investigate . . .

With his six-plus frame and gym-sculpted body, no one would suspect FBI special agent Sam Cooper was once an awkward teenage computer geek-no one, that is, except Casey, the gorgeous girl who captured his heart on the first day of high school and held it for the last fourteen years. When a hunt for a hacker brings Casey back into Sam’s life, his long-denied desire becomes impossible to ignore. He knows just how to make her forget the boy he was . . . and show her the man he’s become.

Thanks, Stacey – sounds like one I’ll skip. The discrepancies you pointed out between his feelings and her treatment of him would irk me.
