In the Arms of the Law by Deborah Fletcher Mello is the fifth book in the To Serve and Seduce series. I haven’t read the previous books in the series, but this can work as a standalone. While there were a couple mentions of something that must have happened in a previous book, I didn’t feel like I was missing a lot of background information by not having read the other books. That being said, I will be going back to read the others because I really enjoyed this book.

Chicago police captain Parker Black walks out of the shower to find his boyfriend, district attorney Jonathan Wyler, shot dead on the bedroom floor. In steps his brother, attorney Ellington Black. Knowing his brother loved Jonathan and would never hurt him, he, along with the rest of his family, set about to prove his innocence. He soon finds himself working with investigator Angela Stanfield. Angela was hired by the mayor to help conduct the investigation into the murder, as he feels the police superintendent will be biased, considering Parker and Ellington are two of his children.

It soon becomes clear that there is corruption within the police department and the mayor’s office. But there is also someone else in the background pulling the strings, and his beef with the Black family is personal. He’s determined to hurt them in any way possible. Angela, Ellington, and the rest of the Black family find themselves in a race against time to prove Parker’s innocence and find the mastermind before someone in the Black family winds up dead.

In the Arms of the Law is a page turner that will capture the reader’s attention from the beginning and keep it to the very end. The characters are well-written, the storyline is realistic and not over-the-top, and the romance between Angela and Ellington isn’t rushed and doesn’t overshadow the suspense. It’s a well-rounded book from beginning to end, and I would recommend to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense.

When his brother is accused of murder, attorney Ellington Black vows to prove his innocence, even as he comes up against force-of-nature investigator Angela Stanfield, who suspects there’s more to the story. But Ellington needs evidence, so they team up to find out the truth. Working with this irresistible woman is more than challenging…and it might just land Ellington high on a killer’s hit list.
