I love books about weddings. They are always romantic, uplifting and have a happily ever after ending. Keeping It Together by Lissa Matthews is a wedding story with a twist. The author is a pro at writing erotic, descriptive passages that make your heart palpitate, while conveying the words that every woman wants to hear from the man she loves. She is truly able to make the reader feel what the characters are feeling with just a few optimal word choices. However, there were some instances that the chemistry between the two main characters seemed a little off.
Christina Browning was jilted by her fiancee Russ on their wedding day. Naturally she feels betrayed, humiliated and sad. Not helping the situation was Myrtice, Chrissie’s socialite, “appearances are everything” mother. She instructed Chrissie to explain the circumstances of her newly unwanted, new found freedom to the wedding guests seated in the church. Unbeknownst to her, Russ flew to Las Vegas and married a showgirl.
The day after “the almost” wedding, Colt Fisher, Russ’s half-brother, shows up at Chrissie’s home to make sure she is okay. Colt has harbored feelings for Chrissie ever since they first met, which happened to be at the engagement party of Chrissie and Russ. At the party, Chrissie also felt a twinge of something for Colt, but brushed it away. At the time, she was a very happy girl engaged to the man of her dreams.
Both Chrissie and Colt come from money. Colt is the CEO of a very successful cookie company, attending fundraisers and running board meetings. However, he is not flashy or conceited. He is well liked and admired by his colleagues and employees. Chrissie enjoys the simplicity of life. She works in the gun department at a retail store, is an excellent shooter and has an engraving business on the side. However she does have a girly side that enjoys sexy lingerie.
Colt can’t help himself and shows up on Chrisse’s doorstep six months later. He has strong feelings for her and cannot ignore them for another minute. Chrissie also has been thinking about Colt from time to time. They talk and get to know one another, as they begin to fall in love . Colt’s words, “There is so much I want to say to you, do to you. My self-control is about to go up in flames. I’ll see you tonight.” causes the reader to pant. Sparks ignite between the two and they spend a wonderful, steamy night together which leads to more.
The oddness of their relationship is mentioned throughout the story. How being with each other may somehow hurt Russ and those closest to them is always in the forefront of their minds.
I enjoyed this book. The storyline is solid and the characters are well defined and very likeable.

Colt does, and as the CEO of a cookie company, it’s his job to pay attention to the details. “Maybe I should have married you instead.” She’d been right. He was the brother she should have married and all he has to do is convince her of it with a blend of persistence and seduction.
