I love a great historical romance, and Magnate (The Knickerbocker Club #1) by Joanna Shupe is just that. It is set in the late 1800’s in New York City where big industry like Steel, Trains, and the like are starting to boom. This book takes you back in time where old money and new money do not mix, where society and social standings mean everything. This is the story of Emmett and Elizabeth.
Emmett Cavanaugh grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, in 5 points. He did what he could to help he and his brother survive. He made himself into a new money Steel Magnate. Now caring for his his brother and his two half sisters, Emmett will do anything to keep them safe. His has learned not to trust, to keep his plans to himself. That plan goes out the window when the beautiful, socialite Elizabeth Sloane shows up with a proposition that he cannot refuse.
Elizabeth Sloane has a way with the stock market. She knows that if she has a chance to she could trade on the floor of the New York Stock exchange, but her brother refuses to allow her to do something so demeaning to her station. Knowing that she has to do something to help her family company, she approaches Emmett asking for his backing. After a wager that they make, that she wins, a note, a unsupervised dinner between them and a long hot kiss forces the two to marry.
But mistrust, secrets and misunderstandings could cause these two to crash and burn. It will take Emmett’s family and his best friend to kick him into gear before he loses the best thing that could have ever happened to him.
I love the interaction between these two. Elizabeth is so different from anyone in her social circle. She is in awe of Emmett, the way that he grows up, the way that he worked so hard to make a life for his family, the way that he loves and cares for his little half sisters. It made my heart melt. The misunderstandings between Emmett and Elizabeth added enough angst to the story to keep me hooked. I loved the connection between these two, and their HEA was amazing. I look forward to more from this amazing author.

Born in the slums of Five Points, Emmett Cavanaugh climbed his way to the top of a booming steel empire and now holds court in an opulent Fifth Avenue mansion. His rise in stations, however, has done little to elevate his taste in women. He loathes the city’s “high society” types, but a rebellious and beautiful blue-blood just might change all that.
Elizabeth Sloane’s mind is filled with more than the latest parlor room gossip. Lizzie can play the Stock Exchange as deftly as New York’s most accomplished brokers—but she needs a man to put her skills to use. Emmett reluctantly agrees when the stunning socialite asks him to back her trades and split the profits. But love and business make strange bedfellows, and as their fragile partnership begins to crack, they’ll discover a passion more frenzied than the trading room floor…
