REVIEW: Measure of Love by Melissa Ford

I really wanted to love Measure of Love by Melissa Ford, but I didn’t. This is the sequel to Melissa’s first book, Life from Scratch. Now, I am not sure if I had a hard time with this story because I have not read the first book, as I had a really hard time connecting with the characters.

Measure of Love is a book about Rachel and Adam Goldman. They were married for 13 years, and then divorced. They have since gotten back together and have been dating/living together for about 6 months now. Rachel is a food blogger, and has a book being released about how to survive divorce. Adam left his stressful job as an attorney and is now teaching English. Early on in their dating (the second time around) they decided to make a list of things that they both wanted out of their relationship, so that they could try to avoid making the same mistakes again.

– Take more trips together
– Eat in more
– Go to School plays
– Take classes together

One night, after a couples cooking class (part of their to-do-together list) Adam proposes to Rachel. She is so stunned she agrees. Adam wants to get married in a couple of month, but Rachel has her doubts. She solid and certain that she loves Adam, but she is afraid that if they re-marry, that they might fall into the same pattern that caused their divorce the first time around. Adding to her stress level is her mother-in-law-to-be-again, who wants to run the show by planning a HUGE wedding, and a publisher who tells her not to blog, tweet, facebook, or announce that she and Adam are engaged and getting remarried because she is suppose to be and expert in divorce and this news will hurt book sales.

As the wedding date draws nearer, Rachel receives advice and stories from friends, family, and acquaintances, of the pros and cons of marriage, life, love, commitment, communication, and childern. I guess, you could say that this is a story of discovering who you are and what you really want out of life.

I would really like to go back and read book one, Life from Scratch, because although you kind of got a sense of who these characters are and what contributed to their divorce the first time around, there were just to many holes in the story for me, and I had a really hard time connecting with these characters. If you have read book one, you will probably love this book.

If you did not read Life from Scratch, than I would read it before picking up this book.

Getting re-married to your ex? Piece of cake.

Praise for Life from Scratch

” . . . characters I can relate to, who make me laugh out loud and hungry for dinner.” -– MARY ALICE, co-star of Food Network’s Ace of Cakes

Rachel has made a new life from scratch with her ex-husband, but can they survive the wedding plans?

It may be her second time getting married, but Rachel Goldman is definitely navigating a sticky relationship with her former—and soon-to-be-again—mother-in-law. Plus she’s in a tug of war with the editor of her upcoming book on divorce who is begging her to keep her happy new relationship with her ex, Adam, on the down low. How can Rachel do that when her society-obsessed mother-in-law is eager to get a featured story in the wedding section of the New York Times? Throw in a sister-in-law-to-be who’s navigating her own upcoming nuptials as well as a friend who not only doesn’t want to get married, but is possibly having an affair. Rachel finds herself with too many pots simmering on a very familiar stove.
