One True Pairing by Cathy Yardley: When Jake Reese’s agent tells him the TV show he’s a part of no longer wants him due to his lack of publicity, he’s going to find a way to up his “Q score” fast. In comes Hailey Frost.

Self-claimed protector of her half-sister and her foster sister, Hailey takes the world on her shoulders. When it looks like Jake will help her family’s failing bookstore if she pretends to be his girlfriend, Hailey’s all in – even though she knows the chemistry they have is at dangerous levels.

Jake’s only in town for a weeklong conference, and Hailey’s never going to leave her sisters. Even though everything inside is pulling them together, their circumstances are always going to keep them apart.

One True Pairing is certainly a cute idea. I like that the author went with a fandom romance and delved into this world. However, I didn’t like Hailey at all. Jake was a sweetheart, if a bit dull. But Hailey truly got on my nerves.

Her stands for independence, her inability to let Jake in, or let Jake do anything, really, annoyed me so much. I didn’t feel she was strong. I just felt she was mean, demanding, and cold. I honestly do not understand what Jake saw in her. The one silver lining is her love for her sisters, how she truly cares for them. But even that has an edge of selfishness.

I wanted to like this story, but I just couldn’t. I like a softer heroine. But if you’re a fan of the truly independent one, or if you love a deal romance, I recommend One True Pairing by Cathy Yardley.

They couldn’t be more opposite, the Hollywood actor and the hometown girl, but all they need is a little convention magic to become the perfect ship in Cathy Yardley’s One True Pairing.

Jake Reese needs a decoy girlfriend. Fast. The lead actor of the popular TV show, Mystics, is tired of losing his shirt to overeager fans. Literally. Which is why a chance meeting with gothabilly bookworm-slash-barista Hailey Frost seems almost too perfect to be true. Hailey is not impressed with his TV fame and is desperate to save her family’s bookstore. It’s a match made in Hollywood, but as the two pretend to date, fan fiction becomes reality. Can this OTP become canon?

Thank you….I’ve often thought the “independence” trope is more than a little overdone! Truly annoying…leaves me with the feeling: “why bother?”

My issue with the “independence” trope is that a lot of authors think that independence = mean, b*tchy, etc, and it doesn’t! When it’s done right, it’s great.
