In Own the Wind (Chaos #1) by Kristen Ashley, the Chaos Motorcycle Club is the world Tabby Allen is accustomed to, having grown up in it as the leader’s daughter. She has a tendency to speak her mind and feels like she deserves to cut loose partying considering what she’s been through with her mother’s bad attitude and her controlling ex-boyfriend. And she knows the brothers of the club are there to protect her when she really gets in trouble. Shy Cage is sent out to rescue her from a bad situation one night when she’s in her late teens and he tries to teach her a lesson about where she’s heading in life if she doesn’t straighten out. It does the trick but it also damages the crush she’s had on Shy for a while.
“I wanted more of him. No, strike that, I needed more of him. I put my hands to his body, and the feel of all that smooth skin, soft to the touch, hard underneath rocked through me so thoroughly it felt like it started in my hair and ended at my toenails.”
Tabby moves on with her life and buckles down studying to become a nurse. She also meets a guy who is definitely not looking to join Chaos and for a while things are great. But when tragedy strikes, Shy is there again for her in whatever capacity she needs. She loves the friendship they form but feels a bit guilty that she still has some residual feelings for him from a few years ago. She doesn’t want to ruin their current relationship. When she sees him with another woman, she gets a glimpse of her true feelings and acts on her jealous, making her presence known. This changes her dynamic with Shy instantly and Tabby knows there’s no turning back.
“Seeing her hit him in the chest, the burn in his gut moving up to flame in his lungs, compressing them, making it suddenly hard to catch a breath.”
Shy Cage has been a member of Chaos for almost ten years and knows he’s found a family he can rely on. He’d do anything for any member of that family, including his leader Tack’s daughter, Tabby. He’s had to get her out of a couple of tough situations over the past few years and knows she’s smart and capable of so much more. Shy plays tough and points out this fact to her in a manner that will get her attention. He’s relieved when she straightens out but is concerned when she avoids him. He gets the opportunity to repair their friendship a while later when her life has taken a huge downturn. He can’t avoid his feelings for Tabby, especially since this is the first time he’s ever truly cared about a woman, but he’s worried about what it will do to his standing in Chaos. They have to figure out if what they have together is serious enough to withstand the backlash from the club or if it’s worth the risk.
I really enjoyed book one in the Chaos series by Kristen Ashley. I’ve never read a story set in the biker world before but it was a lot of fun learning some of the lingo and reading about how tight of a group the clubs are. Tabby and Shy are interesting characters on their own but when they get together, it gets smoldering hot. I loved their bantering back and forth and how they both have a learning curve when it comes to relationships between “bikers and their old ladies.” I would recommend this book if you like to read hot romance and are looking for a different type of setting. I will definitely be checking out book two!
