Summer Nights with the Maverick (Montana Mavericks: Brothers & Broncos #1) by Christine Rimmer is how the beginning of a series should be. Everlee Roberts is a single mom who works at Doug’s Place and lives with her dad while trying to make her dream little shop a reality.

Weston Abernathy is a wealthy man who works at the family ranch. Since they met, they were totally attracted to each other. Evy rejected Wes for months; she doesn’t need complications in form of a tall, dark, sexy, rich and “fun time” guy. Plus, her priorities are straight: she has to think about her daughter and her goals. He tried to set boundaries between him and Evy as soon as he knows about her daughter. Yet their fight against their attraction is futile; they’re unable to resist what’s happening between them. But when Wes saves Evy from getting hit with a rock, things start to change…for good?

As they date, they agree to keep things casual, but love has other intentions with these two and their relationship grows. Will they get their happily ever after?

Even though they may look different on the surface—she’s the forever kind of woman while he’s a guy with commitment issues—Evy and Wes are more alike than they think. She was abandoned by the father of 4-year-old Lola, who never wanted the responsibility. Wes, on the other hand, had a hard breakup with his fiancé almost ten years ago. They both have been deeply hurt from those relationships and sworn off love to keep their hearts away from suffering. I LOVED reading Everlee and Weston’s story because their romance is credible and very touching. And they’re so hot together! Though there were moments when I wanted to hit Wes with a rock—oh, he already got hit by it when he saved Evy…—for being so stubborn.

There are numerous secondary characters in this book, like Wes’ family and Evy’s father, but is little Lola the real rockstar in this book. The precocious and extremely extrovert girl full of charisma has everybody wrapped in her fingers—especially Wes! Also, the book has a mystery vibe surrounding not only this story but the whole series itself that keeps you hooked. Remember the rock that almost hit Evy? Well, it has a cryptic note attached that we’ll understand as we read the future books of the series. That said, at the end of the story we could see who throws the rock. His motives? Guess we’ll know more about it and this cowboy soon. And there’s some kind of curse in Doug’s Place related to an empty chair nobody dares to sit in it.

A book with lots of emotion, a touch of intrigue, a puppy, a cat and a little girl who will steal the hearts of everyone who has this book a chance. And hey, this story has what it takes to make you fall in love with Wes and Evy.

He’s a hero in spurs

But just for tonight

Ever since rancher Weston Abernathy rescued waitress Everlee Roberts at Doug’s bar, he can’t get her off his mind. But the spirited single mom has no interest in a casual relationship, and Wes isn’t seeking commitment. As the temperature rises, Evy feels the heat, too, tempting her to throw her hat in the ring regardless of what it might cost her heart…
