In The Baby They Longed For by Marion Lennox, Noah and Addie have a very complicated relationship ever since the day of her wedding that didn’t happen. However, it’s been years since they’ve seen each other, but now they find themselves working together. Being the professionals they are, they know they can’t afford distractions. Still, their chemistry is hard to resist. But when Addie discovers she’s pregnant, she knows she must tell Noah. Yet, neither are looking for a relationship, so will they take a chance on each other?
“You want to be pregnant?”
Despite the lengthy silence his words were a blast of pure shock. Say it like it was. “Yes.” This much at least she knew for a fact. “I do.”
“You’re kidding.” His voice turned to incredulity. “You planned this.”
“Of…course I didn’t,” she managed. “Noah, we both know that. You must know it.”
What an entertaining, fast-paced, emotionally-charged read Ms. Lennox has delivered in this book, which encompasses a workplace romance; the surprise pregnancy trope; the tragedy of pregnancy, a hero and heroine with a complicated history, two main characters with interesting back stories that had me wanting to know more about the pair and a wonderful growing relationship that made me hope for the best for this pair, considering the tough obstacles they face throughout this story both individually and as a couple.
The way this story started had me hooked immediately, as Noah faces a dilemma and it’s understandable why the heroine reacts the way she does. However, it’s from the moment they meet again where this story really takes off, as it seems Noah is always witnessing Addie at her most vulnerable. Still, their chemistry is intense and present from the moment they come face-to-face for the first time in this book and only gets stronger as this story goes along, as the pair do their best to deny the attraction they have for each other.
As for the dialogue, it was a wonderful combination of intense moments due to main characters back stories that made me sympathize with the pair because of everything they’ve both been through when it comes to relationships. The hero’s ex has put him through so much emotionally and is still making him suffer, but I liked how everything worked out for the hero when it comes to his troubles and getting everything he deserves such as love, family and happiness. Moreover, both the main characters are relatable, likeable and I thoroughly enjoyed their growing relationship.
”I never liked that rug anyway,” Addie said at last, looking down at the mess of broken crockery.
“Designer ware,” Noah agreed. “Supplied by Bland R Us. I’m sure we can find something less sterile in Theatre.”
“Maybe a bedpan with cactus planted inside…”
“It’d have more personality,” he agreed, and she came close to a chuckle. And then she took a deep breath. The time had come. The time was now.
“I have a confession.”
“A confession?”
With the heroine, I really liked her from the moment she was introduced. She handles everything she goes through with resilience and courageousness. Really, she impressed me with her ability to bounce back from the struggles she faces and I liked how she continued to fight for what she wants most – a baby. While the hero, he faces quite a few challenges throughout this story such as coming face-to-face with the heroine and dealing with their shared past, helping the heroine through everything that happens to her when they’re reunited and what he’s going through at the hands of his ex that made him come to the town where the heroine resides. Will the hero win the battle with his ex? Will the hero and heroine be able to handle working together, considering what happened in the past that left the heroine needing to apologize when they come face-to-face again? Yet, the hero’s resilient and I liked that he doesn’t give up when it comes to the battle with his ex when it seems he doesn’t have much hope of winning. I also liked that he doesn’t give up on the heroine, even though she gives him plenty of reason to, as she does her best to put distance between them.
Overall, Ms. Lennox has penned a wonderful read in this book that tugged at my heartstrings and where the chemistry and romance was delightful and the ending left me smiling because of how brave Addie is when it comes to going after what she wants. I would recommend The Baby They Longed For by Marion Lennox, if you enjoy the enemy to lovers trope, medical romances, workplace romances or books by authors Amy Ruttan, Annie O’Neil, Susan Carlisle and Sue Mackay.
