REVIEW: The Brooding Surgeon’s Baby Bombshell by Susan Carlisle

In The Brooding Surgeon’s Baby Bombshell by Susan Carlisle, there’s plenty of chemistry between nurse Zoe Avery and Dr. Gabriel Marks the moment they meet, but she never imagined their one-night stand would result in her becoming pregnant. Knowing Gabriel is adamant in not wanting kids, she doesn’t know how she’s going to tell him that their one-night stand had consequences. Will Gabriel be able to convince Zoe that he wants her and their baby in his life or will they end up going their separate ways?

Although he was pretty sure he wouldn’t like the answer to the question before he asked it, he couldn’t stop himself. “What do you want?”
“To find someone who will love me for who I am. Who’ll put me first in his life and grow old with me.” She looked at him. “To have that happily ever after.”

What an entertaining read Ms. Carlisle has penned in this book, which I loved from the very beginning since this story encompasses the surprise pregnancy trope; a hero not looking for a relationship and a heroine that wants the total opposite in hopefully achieving happy ever after with the right man. Will Gabriel be able to prove he’s that man? However, it was from the moment where the hero discovers the heroine is pregnant where things get really interesting, as it’s going to take a miracle for Gabriel to win Zoe over because she knows how he feels about kids and relationships.

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories since the heroine is barely staying afloat because of things that are happening in her personal life and she’s running herself ragged while the hero has been through so much in his past that it’s understandable why he doesn’t do relationships. Moreover, I absolutely adored the hero. He’s confident and I liked how determined he was to win the heroine over, which is proven by how much he’s willing to help her through everything she’s going through. I also liked how driven he is when it comes to his work. Since being a doctor, especially a surgeon, is about being as focused as he can and not having any distractions, which is certainly what Zoe is. While the heroine, she’s resilient, courageous, stubborn, and I could understand why she’s so resistant to giving the hero a chance because they want different things in life. I also liked her determination to do right for her mother, even though she’s struggling to stay on top of everything, which ends up with her having to make a difficult decision.

”You shouldn’t have done that.”
“Yes, I should. I’ll always be there whenever you need me somehow or some way. I won’t leave you again.”
“Gabe, your work is important. It saves lives. I understand that.” Zoe could only imagine the drama he caused.

Overall, Ms. Carlisle has delivered a really good read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was from strong the moment they come face-to-face for the first time; the romance was delightful, as these two don’t want a forever relationship, and yet, they find themselves unable to stay away from each other; and the ending had me worried for one of the main characters because of what happens, but had me loving that Gabriel realizes how important Zoe is to him. Moreover, the epilogue wrapped this story up nicely, as Zoe and Gabriel have come so far in their life together and I loved their final words to each other. I would recommend The Brooding Surgeon’s Baby Bombshell by Susan Carlisle, if you enjoy medical romances, the second chance romance trope or books by authors Amy Ruttan, Annie Claydon, Scarlet Wilson and Amalie Berlin.
