The Setup by Carol Ericson is the first book in her Kyra and Jake Investigations series.
Kyra Chase is a therapist and consistently acts as a victims’ rights advocate. That’s how she managed to get named to the task force formed to find a serial killer. The thoughts on this serial killer is that he is a copycat to a serial killer from twenty years ago nicknamed The Player. The Player was never found and after six murders never seemed to surface again. So that became a cold case. There’s a reason Kyra wants to be part of this task force. Not that she’s telling anyone. She had to pull some strings to get named to the task force because the lead detective on the case, Jake McAllister doesn’t like working with therapists. Too bad!
Jake McAllister as lead detective and his partner Bill Crouch decide a task force needs to be formed after the discovery of a second body found with the same MO as one found earlier. Captain Castillo called in reinforcements and the task force was formed. Jake wasn’t thrilled to find Kyla Chase on the team. The last time he had to work with a victims’ rights advocate she actually advocated for the criminal to get a reduced sentence. Jake didn’t believe the perp deserved a reduced sentence and there was a major blowup. Maybe he can work around Kyra Chase.
There’s plenty of action and suspense but not a lot of romance in this book. Serial murder investigations mean a lot of legwork and searching for clues. Jake is determined to solve the case and is surprised at how helpful Kyra ends up being. At first they seem to be an unlikely couple but they work out quite well together. I like how their partnership and relationship develops at a steady pace. I really enjoyed the investigative process and the teamwork that is involved. I’m glad there will be more Kyra and Jake stories.
