REVIEW: The Wedding Crasher by Abigail Mann

In The Wedding Crasher by Abigail Mann, Poppy, who is separated from her soon to be ex-husband, is on her way to photograph puffins when her wedding planner friend, Lola, asks her to step in for a photographer. The wedding turns out to be a former friend, Will, who had made it clear he wanted to be more before they went their separate ways years earlier.

The bride is acting shady, the groom’s brother seems to be hiding something, his father has turned the wedding into a business affair, and the groom is determined to rekindle a friendship with Poppy. Lola is determined to make this wedding perfect, but everyone is standing in her way, including Poppy.

The blurb states that the book “will have you in stitches from start to finish—don’t miss the new uplifting book…” which I found not to be an accurate description. This book was not uplifting. Poppy gets treated terribly from everyone ranging from her estranged husband to Will’s father, and even Lola. People walk all over her and she takes it. She has no backbone and doesn’t stick up for herself. She’s indecisive. The way she was treated was sad rather than uplifting. There were several flashback chapters about Poppy’s marriage. I wasn’t sure why there were really included, other than to make Poppy look weak and gather some sympathy towards her. There definitely wasn’t anything humorous in those chapters, as her husband is controlling, leaving Poppy feeling bad and caving to his demands. I found myself eventually just skimming these chapters, as I couldn’t stand how Poppy was being treated.

This book was overshadowed by how awful the characters were. Will’s family is awful, even to each other. His father treats him more as a business commodity, never taking his feelings into consideration. His brother is treated as a problem that needs to be swept under the rug. The only character I really liked from the family was Will, but even he makes some questionable choices regarding his fiancé, and comes across as too laid back about everything that was going on.

If this was supposed to be a romcom, it missed its mark. There were some humorous moments, but they were few and far between and weren’t enough to make up for the unlikeable characters. There was no romance between Will and his fiancé, as they barely spent any time together during the book, and there was little spark between Will and Poppy as well. I normally enjoy romcoms but this one just didn’t work for me.
