The The Wedding Secret (Forever Love #3) by Jeannie Moon starts off smoldering hot in a wine cellar Harper and Kevin have snuck down to in the midst of Kevin’s sister’s wedding. Can there be more than hot sex? Kevin is attracted to Harper in all ways, and likes that she has a brain and isn’t afraid to use it. But Kevin is a big name baseball player and has to go where the contract takes him. After a month of quietly dating, Harper suddenly pushes Kevin away for reasons he is unaware of. He can’t figure out what went wrong, and when he goes away to where his ball career takes him, he still can’t stop thinking about Harper.
Harper has a secret…well, more than one…but the wine cellar incident soon presents as the biggest Wedding Secret of all. Finding herself pregnant, Harper makes huge assumptions about Kevin, his character, and his life style, and decides not to tell him. Instead she pushes him away and tells no one who the father is.
When Kevin is suddenly back in town, and Harper realizes he’s back to stay, she’s going to have to listen to her heart and her mind and do the right thing. But can she? Harper trusts no one. “Her life had been one letdown, one disappointment after another until she learned that she couldn’t trust anyone.” When she’s around Kevin he makes her forget all that though. Then chemistry between them is still strong. “When he touched her he owned her.” Kevin hasn’t been able to forget Harper, but will he be able to forgive her?
The Wedding Secret is a well paced, captivating story. Harper has many secrets she’s hiding, but she’s worked very hard to get to where she is today. Her lack of trust and poor judgment in people have caused her to make some bad decisions though, and this threatens everything she’s worked so hard for. I really did not like Harper. I know she’s been through a lot and overcome incredible challenges, but I just couldn’t warm up to her for keeping the biggest secret of all. However, she is a strong character in The Wedding Secret, and her actions and integrity when all was said and done spoke volumes about her. I did feel more for Kevin, and I was as confused as Kevin for a while. I think this speaks well for Jeannie’s writing to be able to relate to a character so well. Kevin was not perfect either though. Jeannie develops Harper and Kevin’s characters very well throughout The Wedding Secret, and I liked seeing them grow and having their layers peeled away. I liked how she really made them work for everything, and she made the plot believable.
I loved the interactions with Kevin’s family, and how challenging it was for Harper since she has been like a part of their family for so long. The sub stories about Harper were a great development too, they helped me have a better frame of reference of who Harper was and where she was coming from. Although I would have liked to see some resolution with one of the sub plots since it was a big part of her life previously, that did not take away from the overall story.
The Wedding Secret is solidly written and easy to follow. Despite not being particularly fond of the heroine and how she handled things, Jeannie kept me reading and very interested. I love it when a writer can evoke such strong emotions about characters. The Wedding Secret is part of a series, but can easily be read and enjoyed as a stand along.
I’d recommend The Wedding Secret to any romance reader.
