Too Close for Comfort by Heidi Rice: While Zane Montoya stakes out the seedy motel that supposedly houses his scum-sucking quarry, he notices a figure scurrying around the room he watches. He’s not going to let the kid get in his way, not after tracking the low-life after he seemingly dropped off the face of the earth. He quickly realizes after seeing a flash of red curls and the outline of a curvy body that it’s not a kid at all – it’s a fiery woman that seems determined to disrupt all his plans.
Iona McCabe’s father was cheated out of his life’s savings by Brad Demarest, and she’s convinced she can get it back. Yeah, she had to scrub some mighty nasty toilets to worm her way in, but she’s here with a skeleton key, and that money has *got* to be behind that door. She opens it, and before she can say “boo”, she’s kidnapped by a man who is definitely not Brad.
After a tense standoff between the two, she learns that the man who belongs to the firm biceps and strong chest is Detective Montoya. He threatens to have her arrested if she doesn’t cooperate, so Iona gives in – even if she’s planning to make a quick getaway when she sees an opening.
Zane has a weakness for Damsel’s in distress – he hadn’t figured it out until Iona informed him of the fact, but looking back he can see it now. More disturbing is that Iona didn’t fit into that mold no matter how much he wanted her to. She fought him every step of the way and tested his patience at every turn. She even managed to inadvertently worm her way into his personal life – okay, maybe that was his fault, but however it happened he had to figure out how to keep her at arms length.
Learning about Zane and Iona was a joy. Zane’s family dynamic is a bit messed up, but a lot of that gets resolved near the end of the book. I loved that Iona stood up to Zane – they were matches for each other. Another great KISS book.
