In Unlikely Neighbors by Renee Daniel Flagler, Holland Davenport decides to finally start living her life after a potential cancer scare. She’s accepted a job and put down a deposit in a town a few hours from where she was currently living, but before she leaves, an envelope arrives, announcing she has inherited an estate in New York from a relative. Having been adopted, Holland is curious to learn about the family she never knew and goes to New York to find answers about them, and about herself.

Nobel Washington is a successful CEO of a beverage company he founded, only his board of directors wants him out. With plenty of time on his hands as he figures out his next steps, he gets to know his temporary new neighbor, Holland. Both Nobel and Holland are on a path of self-discovery, but will they unexpectedly find love along the way?

At times, it felt like the book was simply surface-level and could have delved a little deeper into what had happened. There was a lot thrown into the last few chapters, which made it feel rushed. There were some things could have been flushed out more instead of making them feel like they were just being glossed over. And as for the chemistry between Nobel and Holland? It felt lacking. While I was rooting for them as individuals, I wasn’t necessarily rooting for them as a couple.

My overall feeling about the book is that I liked it, but I didn’t love it. The concept of the story was interesting, but the way it was executed just didn’t work for me.

Holland Davenport is ready to go beyond her small-town existence. Her plan involves moving into an apartment in Charleston—not inheriting a run-down brownstone in Brooklyn from a relative she never knew. Yet in a burst of daring, Holland meets the challenge head-on, moving to New York to learn more about her family and renovate the place. Add to that a gorgeous next-door neighbor who turns out to be a board member at her new job, and she’s definitely out of her depth.

Noble Washington is the successful CEO of a company he spent a decade building. But his carefully ordered life begins to unravel the second he meets fiery social worker Holland—and spends one unforgettable night with a woman who should be off-limits.

There’s a wall and a world of differences lying between them. But the sheltered Southerner and the ambitious native New Yorker feel a pull that just won’t be denied…
