In One in a Million by Beverley Kendall, a mix-up at a fertility clinic leaves star Whitney “Sahara” Richardson in shock when she discovers that a mix up at a fertility clinic resulted in her eggs being fertilized by a man she never met and implanted in his wife. Now, she’s the biological mother to a child she hadn’t planned on having until years down the road.

Sahara was content to know that her daughter would be raised by two parents, but when she learns that Myles had been left by his wife, she’s determined to step into her role as mother. Myles, however, has no intentions of giving up his daughter. The two decide to co-parent, but as they spend time together, unexpected feelings develop. They work on becoming a family, but when Shahara’s career and Myles’s ex force them to face the real-world again, will their newfound family survive?

The concept of the story was interesting, but the execution didn’t work for me. First, it felt like there was no chemistry between the couple. There’s no real transition from going from just being co-parents to lovers. There’s no real getting-to-know-you moments. It’s just, one minute they’re co-parenting, the next they’re sleeping together, even though, at times, they didn’t particularly seem to like each other all that much. Second, I would have expected more heartwarming scenes involving the pair and their daughter, but they were few and far between. What readers get instead are a whole lot of side characters and situations that don’t enhance the story too much. Personally, I would have rather seen more development of Sahara’s and Myles’s romantic relationship and their growing into a family unit than all of the side things, which took away from that.

The situation Myles’s ex created was extreme. It seemed like it was done to add even more drama to the story, but then there’s no real conclusion to it. As a reader, I like to see people face the consequences of their actions, especially when they’re bad, but in this case, readers don’t get that. There was no closure or justice.

The author had a chance to create a heartwarming story about this newfound family, but the focus gets pulled away from them, leaving them–as individuals, as a romantic couple, and as a family unit—underdeveloped. The book is also mentioned as being a celebrity rom com, but I’m honestly not sure how that came to be, because there are not a lot of humorous moments in the book. This story had potential to be great, but instead, it missed the mark.

World-famous Whitney “Sahara” Richardson is at the top of her game. With four Grammys, an Oscar nod, and a half-billion-dollar clothing line, her career is skyrocketing. Even her headline-grabbing dating life is looking up. And if everything goes as planned, marriage and children are just a few years away—and they will come in that order. However, a mix-up at the fertility clinic where her eggs are stored puts the cart before the horse, making her the biological mother of a child she didn’t carry and whose father she’s never met.

Oops. Sahara suddenly has a daughter…and her father wants to keep her.
