You Can’t Fall in Love with your Ex (Can You?) by Sophie Ranald is a book about what if’s. What if your first love never left, what if you still had a career in art that you loved, what if your life was exciting and spectacular? That is the premise of this book.
Laura use to be a ballerina, she use to perform on stage, she use to have a bright shining future, but scandal, rumors, and a horrible accident caused Laura to lose her dream and the man that she loved. It all just ended, there was no romance running it’s course and people drifting apart. Now she has a husband and 2 children. Now she has lost her job and they are moving, now here husband has a promotion and she rarely ever sees him any more.
When the lover from her past, Felix reappears, it causes Laura to stop and wonder what if. As Felix and Laura spend more and more time together, Laura will need to decide what is most important in her life. Can she rekindle the love that she and Felix had? Is she willing to give up her home, her life, her family, her husband for a life that could have been? Laura will need to take a deep look into her soul and the events of the past in order to follow the path meant for her.
Ok, let me start by saying that I really wanted to love this book. The synopsis sounded really really good, and I have to say I really looked forward to reading this book, but in the end, it fell flat for me. The back story is told in Flashbacks to when Laura was younger, a ballerina, had a bitchy competitive friend that helped spread rumors and lies and drive a wedge between Laura and Felix. Although I did respect Laura for not starting an affair with Felix, I had a hard time with the half truths and misdirection that she gave her husband. I though it was weak of her to compare her husband to Felix. No two people are alike, and Jonathan did everything to try to support his family and Laura.
For me there was just something that was missing in this story. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I guess I wanted something more and I just did not feel the connection to the characters in a way that I wanted to . It was not a bad story, it was just not a story that excited me. If your like a good what if story, then you might want to try this one.

So what if once in a blue moon she still daydreams about Felix, the man who broke her heart? After all, living well is the best revenge.
But then an unexpected encounter turns everything upside down. How can Laura risk throwing away everything she has for a dream of the past? She can’t be falling in love with Felix all over again… can she?
Here is another heart-warming romantic comedy from best-selling author Sophie Ranald. If you adore Lucy Diamond, Tracy Bloom and Sophie Kinsella, prepare to be swept off your feet by You Can’t Fall in Love With Your Ex… because you can!
